I agree. I avoid open strings other than E, or if the particular riff requires it!

That's the problem for bassguitarist - 50%  of humour is being automatically lost when going onstage !

Open A string but use your plucking hand make it sound like you're playing the fretted note

You should have it sussed by the time the song ends.
