theplumber
Playing in local pub Bar Bliss Kirkintilloch, just outside Glasgow last night with my band. Small bar with large window in front of which the band play and TVs on the wall. Looked up at one point to notice the other 3 members of the band playing away whilst watching golf on the TV....I continued to look out the window at passing Police cars and buses!
KingBollock
I once went to a gig in Swansea because a friend’s band were headlining. There were five other bands. Unfortunately, Wales were playing England in the rugby six nations, and there was a TV behind the bar… At one point, the singer for one of the bands had jumped off the stage and was going bonkers, he was putting on a hell of a show, really going for it. And just about no one, other than me, saw it because everyone was standing at the bar with their eyes glued to the damned telly. I’ll be honest, it made me really angry.

See what I did there, 'trying'. Oh please yourselves! (In a Francis Howerd voice) 😉 1

That beats Starsky and Hutch into a cocked-hat. 😊

To be fair, it's not just Wales - I've played gigs where England are playing in the World cup; last year we actually stopped playing so that everyone could watch a penalty shootout. I played one gig where we were on at the same time as a local darts tournament - same room, opposite ends (thank goodness). And I've played while watching a conveniently placed TV.

Then again, the last time we played one of the lady punters got a bit over the top with the drink and was asked to leave by the manageress. She kicked off and had to be escorted out the door and continued to kick off and kick some folk as well! The manageress phoned the cop hotline and within minutes there was two vans and a car outside the venue! By the way I continued to play but had a great view of it all through the window! The cop car came screaming round the corner blue lights going,up on to the kerb and the guys jumped out leaving the doors open and decked the whizzed punter! handbag went flying and everything spilled out on to the deck! Apart from that it was an ok night!

Likewise - also originally from Swansea but now living in Leicester. Have done quite a few gigs following straight on from the Six Nations in local bars. Good if England win, but we’ve had the place empty completely before now because they’ve lost. Not exactly a brilliant atmosphere! 1

Not exactly a brilliant atmosphere! I had the same when England got dumped out of the 2015 world cup. Everyone left. BL negotiated a slightly reduced fee for us to finish early. Not exactly a brilliant atmosphere! I used to dread if England won the rugby and we were playing in the Welsh Valleys - the Welsh punters would be a little upset (!) and I have more of an English accent that Welsh. 😃

I now live about the same distance from Swansea (Llanarthne) as I did from Leicester when I lived in the Midlands (Nuneaton). i don’t know why I find that interesting. My mum’s family are from Hinckley. The best job I ever had was in Hinckley. So was the worst. 1
Steve Browning
Back in the 80's I played in a soul band. We were playing a club that had screens either side of the stage. I looked up from my bass to see every member of the band watching the screens intently. I turned and saw that they were showing the video for Girls On Film. 1
