Double bass - *SOLD*
£1000
Leighton Buzzard

Recommended Posts

German style flatback 3/4 size bass, possibly from Czech Republic (no label), I'm guessing mid 20th Century. Carved top, ply back. Perfect for jazz. I've had it as my spare bass for the last 10 years but it's time for it to move on.

It's definitely been messed around with at some point. Looks like the neck has had a major repair and been reset at a lower angle but it's all solid. Adjustable bridge and last setup by Jerome Davies. Strung with Evah Pirazzi Weich. You can hear me playing it here

Please ask any questions or come round and have a look.

Bit of an anorak question (but of interest to me) is it D or E flat at the heel? Thanks

Not anorak if you're used to one or the other, I utterly rely on it being a D

Eb I'm afraid, as most German basses are in my experience. I never used the heel as a reference point so swapping between D and Eb necks is not a problem. I never considered it could be until someone didn't want to hire this bass for that reason.

Sadly not for me then … but lovely looking instrument for what seems like a very reasonable price

My bass is Eflat; and I like it that way as there is better access to F, the octave harmonics and an easier transition to thumb position.  I'm happy to play a d neck though, doesn't take long to get used to it.

I play the cello too, where the first finger with thumb on neck yields anything from E to F...but no-one fusses about it. You just adapt.

There is tho, one good reason to favour a D neck bass, which is that you can have a bigger body for the same scale length. Quite a few 4/4 basses were converted to shorten the scale to make fingering easier.

Some people make a lot of fuss about this, many of whom a. Haven't tried an E neck and/or b. Never go up there anyway.😂

( Present company excepted, of course)

If you like this nice German bass at the excellent price at which it is offered, don't let the neck type put you off!

I’d agree with the above. Looking back at several past posts asking for advice about getting a decent starter bass this is the one, folks. Plus you’ll go onwards and upwards with this.
