If Dave Grohl can take the train to Glastonbury, what excuse can anyone else have? 😀

It’s funny, the younger me feels really let down by this lack of rock star extravagance but the current me applauds this wholeheartedly as Mr G being both grounded and aware of the worlds bigger issues. Well done to him.

Bloody foreigner, lefty, liberal, woke, communist, union supporting, extinction rebeliing, environmentalist, lefty, oil stopping, marxist, liberal, socialist elite. Who the hell does he think he is?

At least that'll be the GB News/Daily Mail take on it.

I work at Hiwatt, not for Los Bitchos! The amps they're loaning came from our workshop though, which is always nice to see on TV.

I'm watching their set now. Good stuff! Nice Tina Weymouth vibe from bassist Josefine Jonsson.

(not to be confused with the other Josefine Jonsson, who appears to be an ahem specialist ladieswear photographer, I discovered from google today - luckily I'm not in the office)

Got some QotSA on now, nice to see Jon Theodore on drums, previously seen doing a Animal from the Muppets behind the kit with The Mars Volta

I was disappointed when Joey Costillo left QOTSA but I think Jon Theodore is their best drummer so far

Is this the most senior citizen Glasto ever? Candi Staton 83, Debbie Harry 77, Sparks 77 & 74, EJ 76,  Cat Stevens 74, Chrissie Hynde 71,  Neil Barnes of Leftfield 63 or 62, Axl Rose 61, Fatboy Slim, Duff McKagen and Barrington Levy all  59,  Slash 57, Dave Grohl 54.  Take heart, BC posse. there's plenty of time yet to get booked 😁.  BTW I'm a slip of a lad of a mere 52 summers

That's 15 musicians out of literally thousands

Having a trawl on various socials and reading threads about some of the older bands/artistes playing this year...lot of posts about Debbie Harry (voice gone/just stop), Generation Sex (shambolic), Sparks (just play the hits), GnR (is that Ian Beale/Mick Hucknall?).

There's also a huge trend of responses trying to shutdown negative opinion, along the lines of 'My mother used to say if you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all.'

I do wonder whether many of the respondees were actually around when these [older] acts were at their peak, rather than just using Glastonbury as a box ticking exercise.  I also question whether many who went have something wrong with their ears.

On the positive side, while I'm not particularly a fan of Manic Street Preachers, their set was clearly well rehearsed, on point and hugely enjoyable.  Queens of the Stone Age, likewise.  Same goes the Foo Fighters (even though I can't stand them).  It's all well and good posting positive comments about these, but people posting negatives about Debbie Harry are just hit with a barrage of retorts about her being 77, how fantastic she is for that age and how she's doing her best.

Honestly, who cares about how old anyone is?  If you can't do it, then don't do it.  Just because you're classified as a legend, does not equate to your performance being legendary.  Someone needs to have a frank conversation with Debbie Harry and say, 'You know, love.  It's over.  Retire gracefully.  You can't hit the notes any more and surrounding yourself with a couple of guitarists who are young enough to be your grandchildren just looks creepy.  It's embarrassing.'

Although I would generally agree with you I think maybe there is a difference between a festival appearance and a 'proper' gig. If I've paid good money to see that bands particular gig I would expect them to deliver the goods. But if they were part of a multiband line up I wouldn't be so bothered.

Looking at the TV footage there seemed to be thousands of people enjoying Blondies set regardless. A bit of sunshine, a few drinks and a feel good vibe singing along to a load of songs that brought back your teen memories is not a bad afternoon for most of the general public.

I think there is a big difference between seeing a group when you are there and watching it on the telly. I saw some of it yesterday. Saw blondie, watched the first half of the first song and thought, no, won't watch that - she was hitting the notes though, but everything else was wrong. Saw sparks - they did do some of the hits and I thought they did pretty well, not that much different to what they always were - crowd seemed to like them. GnR, well, they were always bad - impressed they made it on stage, so techincally better than they used to be. Generation Sex, well, we actually watched a few songs as we were laughing so much, so no arguments there!

My opinion on Elton and Blondie, having finally had a chance to watch their sets:

Debbie Harry is, worryingly, starting to look like my old Nan (R.I.P).... and doesn't sing as well as her...
Chris Stein's guitar stylings are sorely missed.... and temp bassist Glen Matlock lacks the required 'groove' while disappointingly simplifying the classic basslines on Rapture, Atomic etc. Leigh Foxx please get well soon. The songs need you!
Clem Burke.... pure quality as always. A monster drummer and still the best thing about the band...

Elton John.... Wow!! What can I say?!?!
An absolute masterclass in songwriting & performance! Emotional, stirring, celebratory and uplifting in equal measure. His band are stunning & I particularly enjoyed Matt Bissonette's bass playing, honouring the beautiful, melodic basslines of the late, great Dee Murray while making them his own.
How lucky we are to live in a time where so much amazing music has been made and performed....

I was going to post, but this is sort of exactly what I’d of written- only difference would be that ‘my’ Nan couldn’t sing for toffee.

Was going to mention Glen Matlock, but wasn’t sure if I’d of been accused of talking rubbish- but he’s nowhere near the bass player needed for the groove of those Blondie songs

It's also lucrative. There is no supply without demand, from those who want to tick the box and say they saw Blondie, GnR, whoever, and those who still watch it on the telly, keeping the viewing figures high enough to justify another meander through the festivals next year. If someone offers you big money to plod through the greatest hits one more time, and you enjoy going through the motions, you'd be a fool not to take it. Screw the begrudgers.

By the time your favourite band is playing large arenas, or stadiums, or is high up on the bill at festivals, their best days are long behind them, anyway. If you didn't see them when they were playing small, filthy sweatboxes, you've probably missed the really good stuff already 🙂
