Fender Japan jazz bass with strange serial no.

Hi all,

Friend of mine has a Fender jazz bass that is made in Japan which I am interested in buying but the serial number doesn't seem right. It is only 5 numbers - no letters. From what I can see online, this is not normal for Japanese made Fenders. Any ideas please?
