MuseMatt Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Was looking at a recent foo fighters gig and it looks like Nate's switched to two 9x10 cabs, but I'm not sure what they are. Added the screenshot, concert here. Anybody who recognises this? Quote
Chienmortbb Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I cannot see the gap between them. Are you sure its not one 18x10? 1 Quote
MuseMatt Posted August 25, 2023 Author Posted August 25, 2023 Failed to paste the link, you can see a gap here: Quote
gjones Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 (edited) That'd make an impression at the Dog and Duck on Saturday night 🤣 Edited August 25, 2023 by gjones 1 1 Quote
MuseMatt Posted August 25, 2023 Author Posted August 25, 2023 Of course random google terms help only after making a thread. It looks like an Ampeg V9 cab, which is quite a break from his Ashdown 810s (imo) Quote
BigRedX Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 Interestingly no amps visible and one one (perhaps) microphone on any of the cabs in the fist photo. Maybe they are just stage props? Quote
fretmeister Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I've not seen those before. I'm not lifting them! Quote

Maybe they are just stage props? He does use racked amps (for a very long time now) so that shouldn't be the thing; I think the mic'ed up amp is the dirty one, I think he runs clean and drive bi-amped due to the sound of the EVO and the BTA Quote
Merton Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I think Ashdown are in the process of making a facsimile of them for him for some reason 1 Quote
Bill Fitzmaurice Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 It has to be for the look. The actual need for those died with the invention of the true electric bass specific ten and good PA. 4 Quote
thodrik Posted August 25, 2023 Posted August 25, 2023 I think that he really needs to have another two cabs stacked on top for them to be of much practical use. The current cabs don't quite come up to ear level so he might not even hear them properly. Also, he definitely needs a couple of those Trace Elliot Bright Boxes as well for added sonic balance. 4 1 Quote
BassmanPaul Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 I watched the entire video. All I heard was noise and screaming. Not my cup'o Earl Grey Tea! 1 Quote
pete.young Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 There was a discussion about this in the Glastonbury thread. Unsurprisingly I can't remember what the conclusion was, if there was one. Quote
jezzaboy Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 I think he uses in ear`s? Bit pointless unless it`s for the look. Quote

krispn Posted August 26, 2023 Posted August 26, 2023 I’d just presumed it was MAS Audio. Goes to google Ampeg v9 1 Quote
Lfalex v1.1 Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 If they really are a stage prop, they could be proper "dummy" cabs; Cones in the drivers but no magnets No back on the cabinet (all to save weight) I guess the acid test is- has anyone seen evidence of the cones moving? Quote

Yes there is at the bottom right corner of the upside down V his legs form. A lot of bands who still uses amps, especially if they use several different amps, have them placed at the back in a rack to be switched between and/or combined depending on the songs. Bill Fitzmaurice Posted August 28, 2023 Posted August 28, 2023 In case anyone wonders why a 9x10 the answer is impedance. If you use 8 ohm drivers you can't wire eight of them for an 8 ohm load, you may only get 1, 4, 16 or 64 ohms. You can wire a 9x10 as triplets in parallel, the three groups in series for an 8 ohm load. Or you can wire nine 4 ohm drivers for a 4 ohm load. That gave Ampeg more driver options than the 32 ohm they used in the 8x10. 6 Quote
