PatrickJ Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 I'm looking for some advice to help with a particular pick playing problem I'm having please. The covers band I'm involved with play I saw Her Standing There by the Beatles which I duly play with a pick. It's one of 4 songs in our set list that I play with a pick, however, with this one I have an ongoing issue with it slipping out of position between my fingers to the point I can no longer play thus forcing me to briefly stop to adjust. On a warm gig night with slightly sweaty hands this can happen a few times in a relatively short song. Has anyone else faced a similar problem? I'm hoping I can get some pointers on either technique, or tips, on how to solve the problem. Quote
PaulThePlug Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 If ya like ya choice of pic... try drilling a 1/4" hole in the bit ya hold... 2 Quote
Waddo Soqable Posted August 27, 2023 Posted August 27, 2023 Glue a bit of sandpaper on either side of the bit you hold (if you see what I mean) 1 Quote

ezbass Posted August 29, 2023 Posted August 29, 2023 Try playing with the upper ‘corners’ rather than the point. This is how I use my picks on bass, I also use a .73 (good enough for Bobby Vega). 2 Quote

Those are the Max Grip Nylon ones, which will produce a significantly different, rounder, warmer, less snappy and clicky, tone, than the Tortex ones. Also the Nylon picks are considerably more flexible than Tortex picks of the same gauge. For instance the Dunlop .73mm Nylon pick will be more flexible than even the .60mm Tortex one. When not using a combination of different finger picking/plucking techniques to play bass I personally prefer either a Dunlop Tortex .60mm pick or a 3.1mm soft Wedgie rubber pick, depending, as obviously they produce very different tone respectively. BassAdder60 Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 (edited) I find large triangle picks tend to minimise the moving in your fingers issue Edited September 6, 2023 by BassAdder60 Quote
TheLowDown Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 You can buy plectrum grips that stick to the plectrum and give it a grippy surface https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125599596576 You can also try rubber plectrums. Quote
BassAdder60 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Avoid picks that have a shiny surface I find many picks that have a gloss finish tend to move in the fingers more do than matte surface Quote
