This doesn't bode well

I sold a guitar on Reverb. Booked the evri via Packlink on Wednesday on a 24 hour service as I didn't want it sitting in a depot over the weekend. It was picked up Thursday so should have been delivered on Friday, but wasn't.

I have been trying to find out what's happening and this is the tracking info on evri's site:

I'm not sure why they are saying it is bigger than expected — I entered the correct weight and dimensions when booking the delivery. Trying to find more info I discovered different tracking information on the Packlink site:

Evri's automated phone system seems to be designed to infuriate and after going through various options which offer no new information, it hangs up with no chance to speak to a sentient being.

I'm now waiting for someone at evri, and someone at packlink to get back to me with an update.

Not good and the damaged part is a worry.

I had an issue with EVRI when they were Hermes where a delivery i was expecting on a "Next Day Delivery that i paid extra for) didn't arrive and was showing it was sitting in their local depot from 05:00hrs that morning. When i finally managed to talk to someone they had the cheek to say there wasn't a van due in my area that day so they haven't sent it. Altho i live in the countryside its still Central Belt of Scotland. When i said i paid extra for a Next Day Delivery they simply didn't care and offered no recompense.

It was also due on the Fri and because they don't deliver at weekends i asked if i could come and pick it up from the local depot which was only 25 miles from me they said no as i need to wait for a failed first delivery.

Absolute joke of a company and would not use them again if i have the choice.

Hope the delivery is sorted out soon for you @Jean-Luc Pickguard.

Evri will take a booking for a parcel that’s too big. They’ll then try and charge you extra for handling it.

You have to remember that most Evri drivers are using their own cars and tend to deliver small items.

The size was 108cm x 53cm x 12cm and I paid the price packlink quoted plus about twenty quid for insurance against evri being careless tw@ts.

I've just looked up evri's maximum size contraints and found this:

Quote

You can send parcels that weigh up to 15kg and are 120cm long. We also have a maximum volume of 245cm, to calculate this yourself you just need to add together the 2 shortest dimensions and multiply this by 2. Add the length and if the number you get is less than 245 then you’re good to go.

according to my calculation this is:

2 x (53 + 12)  + 108 = 238

So the size shouldn't be a problem even without having to argue that the box tapers so the volume would actually be less than if the sides were parallel.

The tracking on Packlink is now showing three new updates timestamped this morning each saying "It is in the carrier’s network, on its way from its origin to its destination."

No indication of where in the world it is though, and I've not had the promised update.

Oh well tomorrow's another day.

I currently have a Spector that was supposed to be with me on Friday. Never showed up. Fefec Tracking turned to delayed until last night where it appears to now be at another depot but delayed still. I take comfort in the fact its moved but fear it could be low stuck there for days or weeks.

I feel for you, it absolutely infuriating and I despise companies that can't get something they've been doing for years right..

You'll have to let us know how you managed this.  I had a pedal I sold to someone on here go missing and never managed to get in touch with a human.

it was a long time ago when they were Hermes. Can't remember where i got the number if it wasn't on their advert or web page.

A google search I found this number for EVRI :-  0330 808 5456

i haven't tried it myself but hope it works for you guys.

The telephone number is useless; it is a robot that just tells you what you already know from the tracking with no chance of speaking to a person. The webchat is also a robot but if you're lucky you get an opportunity to escalate it. I did that yesterday and have just got a reply from evri support saying the guitar should be delivered today, so I'm hoping it will arrive with its new owner in one piece.

The email I received was from the address [email protected] — that might come in useful in the future, but until I try emailing it I wouldn't bet against it being set to bounce incoming emails.

With no disrespect to anyone who has/does, I really struggle to understand why anyone would entrust anything of any value to Evri, they are a mass-market small parcel business delivery service that clearly has a 20% loss and/or damage rate built into it's KPIs. Hope this works out but for god's sake, next time don't use Evri (I won't tell you my horror story - it was an incoming and expensive parcel (studio gear) but suffice to say I wouldn't use them unless they paid me the equivalent value of the item in question as a deposit first. I specify with sellers that if they use Evri I'm not buying) :)

The buyer has now confirmed that the guitar has arrived in one piece. Phew!

I've been sending other items using royal mail, or parcelforce for larger items. However parcelforce don't cover guitars/basses. Does anyone have a preferred courier for basses or guitars?

They're all a shower of buggers when it comes down to it.  I take the "courierproof packaging", siege mentality approach - I double box, I pack the bass out internally so there's no internal movement in the box.  So far, all's been well.  I've historically used UPS or ParcelForce, but they're all a bunch of slopey shouldered box chuckers at the end of the day.

I think it's absolutely outrageous that we have to pay insurance against their potential cluck ups in the first place.

Most of the couriers do not properly insure for damage even if you pay the extra.

So use whoever you like and then buy a separate insurance policy for it - or there is a specialist called Overland Express who say they specialise in guitars and kit.

I sold a bass to a member here recently and he sorted his own insurance for the courier, seems what sensible people do, but still doesn't remove the 24-48 hours of stress :)

Just checked, he used Secursus https://www.secursus.com/en-gb/?gad=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMImaGpvKyTgQMVRvDjBx3oUQtjEAAYAiAAEgJsd_D_BwE

I'm dating myself here, but older folks will get the reference.

I wouldn't trust Evri (or Yodel for that matter) to deliver Captain Scarlet in one piece.

Like they used to say of Parcelfarce, "we can lose an elephant and break an anvil".
