Rich Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 ...assuming you're a} alive and b} old enough, what tape are you putting in your Walkman or car stereo? For me, it's a C90 with Level 42's eponymous 1st album on one side and their 'Pursuit of Accidents' on the other. 3 Quote
Linus27 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 This is easy, it would 99% be Madonna 'Like and Virgin' and Madonna 'Madonna'. 1 Quote
bartelby Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Ooh, that's a tough choice. Probably a home done compilation tape with, amongst others: Metallica, Anthrax, Slayer, Dead Kennedys, The Damned, Minor Threat, Iron Maiden, Dio, WASP, The Cramps, The Meteors... 2 Quote

Jackroadkill Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 To use the C90 get-out clause - Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band on one side and A Night At The Opera on the other. 1 Quote
Paolo85 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Well, nothing would prevent me from putting in the same stuff from the 50s that I listen to on Spotify. Knowing me there's a chance I would not listen to 1985 stuff untill 10 years later when it's easier to tell what was meant to leave a mark. But who knows... there was proper good stuff back then. So maybe I would be different. If I bumped into it, Virgin Steele's Noble Savage from 1985 would get a lot of listening. And so would Megadeth and Slayer's debut albums. Quote
Doctor J Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Projecting coolness onto my young self, it would be Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion and Watchtower - Energetic Disassembly In reality, it was Now That's What I Call Music 6 and Hits! The Album 3 2 Quote
Newfoundfreedom Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Two years too early for me. I could tell you exactly what I was listening to in 1987. But in 1985 I was only 10 and didn't have either a Walkman or any interest in music. 1 Quote
chris_b Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 I was probably listening to albums and tapes from the likes of Bobby Bland, The Blues Brothers, Robert Cray, Stevie Wonder, BB King, Albert Collins, Tina Turner, Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, Eric Clapton, Tower of Power. 2 1 Quote
cetera Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 (edited) Easy.... after September 1985 it was KISS 'Animalize' on one side and Kiss 'Asylum' on the other. Or Van Halen '1984' on one side with Iron Maiden's 'Powerslave' on the other.... Edited September 8, 2023 by cetera 3 Quote
Reggaebass Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 I was well into Gregory isaacs Night Nurse then and was working in central London , walkman was on every single day , I had the one with the bass slider on the front, I literally wore a few cassettes out then 2 Quote

BigRedX Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 (edited) I couldn't afford a car or even a Walkman in 1985. If I had it would have been Doot-Doot by Freur (which even though it came out in 1983 had yet to be bettered by anyone IMO) or A Secret Wish by Propaganda. Edited September 8, 2023 by BigRedX 3 Quote

franzbassist Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 (edited) First year at uni. Took my 1.1 Fiesta down with me, upgraded the radio, added speakers on the parcel shelf in the back, and had a shoe box full of tapes to dip into as the mood took me. Good times! These are the albums I remember playing the most: U2 "Unforgettable Fire" Level 42 "World Machine" Stevie Ray Vaughan "Couldn't Stand the Weather" Kate Bush "Hounds of Love" Killing Joke "Night Time" Judie Tzuke "Ritmo" Icehouse "Primitive Man" Plus plenty of older Purple, Rainbow and Whitesnake. Ah, I'd forgotten A Secret Wish, I loved the album and loved the remixes even more (In which Duel became Jewelled). Seew,s so dated now but vert powerfully produced 👍 Quote

rushbo Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 My tastes expanded in '85 when I started to work at Virgin Records in Birmingham. I went from a rocker who liked a bit of pop/indie to the smart alec music nerd that I am today. In heavy rotation at Rushbo Towers at various points in 1985 would have been: Ratt: Invasion of Your Privacy Prince: Around the World in a Day REM: Fables of the Reconstruction Suzanne Vega: S/T Big Audio Dynamite: This is BAD Quote
