jmstone Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 Just listening to some Suzanne Vega stuff as my brother mentioned she has some great basslines on 99.9F, I came across this youtube vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdoG3NkMI1I Now, clearly the bassist is great, but to me the timing sounds really off in places - mainly in the riff between verses. Or is it just me? James Quote
Lemuel Beam Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 His internal clock sounds OK to me.. I only detected the sort of normal "human" variances in feel and tempo you get in a live performance. We're so used to hearing music in the media that is produced with a computer's idea of time and tempo that natural time and internal feel can maybe sometimes seem a little uneven.. Quote

It simply doesn't groove, he's well out of the pocket because he's picking every note, I reckon he needs some hammers and pulls and leave a note out here and there to let it sit right. Either that or he needs a few lessons with NWR. By far the worst thing about that video though are the dreadful lyrics and the fact that Vega's become a caricature of herself. The softly sung, emotional, vulnerable, highly imaginative, in touch with her inner self singer songwriter has tried to fit meaning to words that "sound" interesting and put them to very dull tunes. Eurgh! Thanks for ruining my Friday. Quote
bassace Posted May 8, 2009 Posted May 8, 2009 A bit of percussion would have held it together, even a closed hihat. The dynamics of a double bass would have been more compliant. Quote
