Jobiebass
Ive just looked at Eudes Jazz bass and its give me some serious gas. updated spec, 4 String Jazz 22 fret Ash jazz body, same squared edged body as this below also with the blue quilted top Birdeye maple neck 41.3mm (P bass size neck) with inlays like this blue one but in blue pearl, blue quited headstock (fenderish style). Delano MM/Jazz hybrid pickups. Badass Bridge (may choose a diffrent one if anyone can think of anything better for sustain?) Still need to figure out: which electronics will suit me best Nobs + arrangement tuners (chrome hipshot ultra lite clover?) nut type so roughly like this, if anyone could give me some advice on things it would be greatly appreciated Edited May 15, 2009 by Jobiebass
far0n
You'd probably be looking at a MM/Jazz combination for pickups, with coil switching on the MM so you could flick it to single coil.... exactly the way my Lakland works. I've always fancied having two switching humbuckers and you could choose what the hell you wanted then !

I play over the MM pup normally anyways but love jumping to the neck pup for a smoother tone.

I've got them fitted to my Shuker here: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...;hl=shuker+porn In active mode, the bridge pickup gives a very good Stingray tone (I prefer it to my real 'ray!). In passive mode, it reverts to single coil, giving a great passive Jazz sound. Jon fitted them to mine with a Delano hybrid EQ, and I can't speak highly enough of the tone. You really can get proper Stingray and Jazz tones from them Edited May 8, 2009 by simon1964

7string
I played Eude's Shuker jazz at the Bassbash in Moffat. It's a great bass and the 33" scale makes it criminally easy to get around on. Sounds good as well. I wouldn't dismiss the 33" scale right away, if Eudes bass is anything to go by the scale length doesn't effect the sound. Before anyone jumps on this point, I know scale length does make a difference, but on that particular J style bass the 33" scale felt good and sounded good as well. far0n
Seriously, I'd wouldn't consider buying anything until you think about what you like and dislike in a bass. It's a hell of a lot of money to part with, if you're left with an instrument that doesn't suit you or is poorly thought out you'll be kicking yourself. Do some research. Find out what sounds like what, not just in your practice room but when your out gigging too. I've had some fab 'bedroom' basses that were appalling when played live. I've been playing since I was 19 and it's only now at 36 I've started considering getting a custom bass, just purely because I know what neck shape I like, what pickups I like, what types of wood I like. It's a very long slow learning curve, honestly.

TBH ive never played live apart from a little 10-15min playing about on stage in an intival of someone elses gig. ive got 2 bands on the go but both need a singer. I know what I like to look at, and I know what it'd roughly like it to sounds like. But Im only 25 and I earn a shitload so why not endulge while I can?? I work all over the country and take my basses with me to sit in my hotel rooms (which I have to pay for unfortunatly) I know how id like it to look, ive done some research cause altho my job is hard ( Financial Contractor) I have a lot of spare time to look about, and I know I love MM 'rays, and I love the feel of the Modulus (not a fan of the tone) but I want something a little special. Ive had a lot of time to play a LOT of basses and I know I dislike lakland. Modulus is amazing, Wals are ok, fender is ok, MM is perfect, warwicks are HORRIBLE. Jobiebass
Made a mock up of how it'd roughly look like, my MS paint skills are less then desirable. thats a badass bridge and I tried to make the pickups look like the Delano's If anyone is good with paint, I wouldnt mind seeing what it looks like in red, or maybe silver? Ive played a fair few basses over the years, owned a few med/high end basses too so i know roughly what im after. plus i guess it helps i but a fretless bass together to my spec too. It's all a learnning a curve and if the bass turns out to be different sounding, well then it's a good excuse to get another! I'm having one built as I need something lightweight. Sorry I can't help more than that - Jon can copy neck shapes which is what i'm having done
yorks5stringer
If I did my build again I'd go for the blue inlays and matching headstock: like someone said earlier, sometimes it's not till you've built/had built your bass do you realise you wish you'd done that..... It was at the last Manchester Bass show that I saw Overwaters with coloured pearloid inlays.......

It's the same shape and basic design. It's only my opinion, but custom builds are especially useful for designs you can't buy in the shops and special requirements, ie, non-standard body shapes, non-standard necks and so on. What you have there appears to be something you could obtain instantly (not a year and a half later) from a shop like GAK at more or less a half/third of the price of a custom build. I'm not saying don't do it - of course, go ahead with it if you want. It's a free country afterall!

But Fenders dont tick any other boxes for me, I think the bridges are lame and they dont excite me when I pick them up, a lot of the ones in shops ive played are terrible, you get the odd sweet one but playing all the others just brings down the Fender name IMHO. In essence if I had a Fender Jazz body, 'ray pickups and electronics, 'ray neck, badass bridge. id be more then happy. but as I cant have that, custom it is. PLus I like pretty things and spending money.

Spoombung
...or buy a Stingray, even? It seems to me you can get exactly what you want by making a few changes to the hardware of a standard Fender or Musicman (as Finbar suggests) or you could order the Shuker, pay three times as much and sit back and wait for a year and a half twiddling your fingers. I'd give it another think if I were you...

You could then add that to a 3 band EQ, and active/passive switch and a passive tone control, but you'd end up with a hell of a lot of controls, might be pricey all in too...
