Electro stock Sandbergs if you did fancy giving one a bash Chris
Just got back from Electro, played a 5er with coil switch (5 string version of the pic you posted), and a 4er without the switch, just a blend between the pickups.
the 5er was definatly better tone wise, I dailed in a pretty decent 'ray sound but it lacked the jazz sound I was after, the 4 string was ok I guess, but the MM tone was a bit lacking meat, and again the jazz wasnt up to scratch. played about with them for just over an hour to try and get the feel for them.

noob question alert...
how much diff would it make if I got the hybrid instead of the full humbucker, with a regular J pickup with 8 poles instead of the 4 poled "half" humbucker? im guessing that would help get the jazz tone I want?

Basically, I want 2 things.
just humbucker on its own for a meaty 'ray sound (HS/HH never works for me with musicmans)
but then switch to a warm fender jazz sound playing over the neck pup.
And hopefully be able to switch between the 2 without having to mess about turning loads of nobs and flicking loads of switches to do it.

Maybe 3eq humbucker, switch to passive which makes the humbucker single coil and seperate nob for ballance + tone when its a jazz?
that way I could pre set the bass up and wouldnt have to twiddle between songs much.

or am I being crazy? im not sure whats possible with EQ so ill leave it to you guys to rip me to bits about it and tell me why im wrong.

Hey man,
there's a load of options out there.
But I'd be tempted to keep the pickup selection separate from the EQ.
Your idea with the switchable MM to single coil and a single coil up front would work fine, with a passive vol, pan and tone, then have an active EQ which you could turn on and off.
This would give you your active Ray sound with a passive J Bass sound, but still give you the option of running the J Bass sound active and the Ray sound passive, if you want to.

Cheers,
Eude

Hey Eude
cheers for your reply mate.
its definatly something worth concidering, let me get this right in my head. passive vol, tone, balance, single coil switch, then another switch to turn on the active 3 eq? I have a feeling all those options will confuse the hell out of me lol, im confused just saying it. Maybe if I can get my head around it a little more id understand. I wanna try and keep it as simle as possible if I can, I had a 4eq 5HS bongo and that was over my head, had just the humbucker on pretty much 1 eq setting its whole life then took me half an hour to find a decent jazz tone when I needed it. im not much of a twiddler to say the least.

Would this work? and where would my problems be with this set up (if its possible) what would I be missing? (except having a HS config, which I was never keen on with my Bongo anyways)
3eq humbucker, a switch turns the humbucker into a single coil passive jazz pick up and also switches on the neck pickup. heard on the Delano site the treble of the 3 eq then turns into the tone nob for the Jazz set up, and then I just need another nob for pan. like this I guess?

Thinking the above pickups
rather then these

with a single one of these

Would I be right in saying id get more of a Passive Fender Jazz tone with the ones I chose rather then these at the bottom?
Also, as the hybrid is half and half, would the 'ray sound suffer for it?

Reckon your first option would work out best.
I know the single pole piece jazz pickups will be more like a Jazz Bass on steroids, rather than a classic one.
Simon's Single Cut which he mentioned earlier in the thread might have just the setup you need.

Si, interestingly my Fender CIJ Power Jazz Bass Special has *it's* P pup round the wrong way too.. I dunno what difference it makes onally, but it's certainly a lot fatter sounding than my 70's CIJ P. That could just be down to the type of pup tho'.

Oh! :)
Nice Freudian slip there, Dood (I assume - or do you really, really love it?)

So .. what is the difference? More "bridge" sound from the E and A or more neck from the D and G?
Sandberg do them all that way round which looks very strange on their classic look California sunburst jobbie.

Also are those Delano pickups on the Sandburgs? They have that same big single pole thing but the website says they are Sandburg pickups.

I think they're "licensed by Delano", as in they're OEM model by Delano made specifically for Sandberg.
They all used to come with Delano branded pickups, changed about a year ago with no drop in price, so I'd assume they're the same pickups in slightly different housings, or perhaps wound to custom specs?

I also think having the lower part of the P pickup further towards the neck would help to fatten up the D & G strings, just my 2p anyway :)

Eude

Yeah, I think that they have the P pickup the wrong way around to make the D and G sound fatter, and then the E and A have more high end, unless they keep the E and A section in the same place and only move the D and G section forwards.
