Just looking for a 0.1uf 100v 104J capacitor for my tone pot. Why do polyesters cost 50-100 times as much as polypropylenes? What do they do better?

Generally speaking, polypropylene capacitors are higher quality than polyesters, although they do tend to be bigger. There's no reason for polyesters to be more expensive - unless you're buying into the vintage component myth.

Polypropylene caps tend to be closer tolerance - so closer to the stated value than polyester caps too, so I'd always opt for those wherever possible.
