PaulThePlug
Son had mentioned the sound of metal-on-metal, like a lap guitar or slide... Happened upon this a couple of weeks back... Mistreated Harley Benton... Frets have been removed... Freebie... ...and a little crack in the back of the neck by the headstock... superglue-d... 0.3mm x 10cm x 1m Stainless Shim... £5 Aliexpress... Gotta cut down, glue, trim, and dress... Edited November 15, 2023 by PaulThePlug

tauzero
I'll be interested to see how this goes - I've been thinking along similar lines myself.
PaulThePlug
I'm thinking that the 0.3 may now be a little thick to conform... but was worried 0.2 might just be like thick foil... Waiting on some dremmel cutting wheel to take the most off before glueing... Edited November 19, 2023 by PaulThePlug

PaulThePlug
Thanks all... think the 0.3mm is a bit thick to work... so ordered some 0.1mm... just to make sure it conforms to the fretboard... I'll post progress...
Daz39
ooh metal fingerboard for Bass. Makes me think of the tracks Tony Levin played on for the Yes/sort-of Yes/Nearly Yes album Union. It wasn't all Stick, I'm sure.

'Nearly Yes' = 'I think so'?

Random Guitarist
Nice, given how thin .1 is I assume you'll be making sure the existing board is super flat before uniting them in glue?
PaulThePlug
I went 0.1 as the 0.3 i think was too thick to make sure it would conform to the neck... and was quite stiff. I'll adjust the truss for flat... String tension and thinner shim should be ok-ish for relief... if i get it set up before the no-more-nails sets!
PaulThePlug
0.1 arrived... Tried to adjust the truss rod to lessen the relief and flatten the neck before sticking on the shim steel... No Joy... opened up the super glued crack... So 101 Hard as Nails... ...and on with the shim steel... Its steel down on the foam rubber garage mats with a box of books on top. Hopefully the thin shim will conform to the fretboard radius. Then a sand of the shim over-edges to the fretboard. Fingers crossed!
hubrad
I had something similar about 25 years back, when a local luthier got some rolled brass (3mm thick iirc) fingerboard blanks and fitted one for me. It was great, but not actually as fret-bright as I had initially expected. Be interesting to hear whether a 0.1mm thickness steel will be enough, but great project either way.. Good luck!
