That´s the poodle´s core (does one say that in english ? I´m german ) -  if it warms your fingers , it´s part of your gear.

Lovely phrase ! I had to check, but I think in English it would be something like  'That's heart of the matter' (Other linguists are available)...or more colloquially 'The thing is...' :)

Thanks, every day is a school day, and that's just fine by me !

Expensive, but necessary. Warm rooms and hot water are always a good choice.

I also needed a new boiler, multiple car repairs, new tumble dryer, new washing machine.

I would have preferred to buy a new neck from a custom shop, and a better mandolin, and some Hiscox cases.

However, on this occasion, family members come first.

We both made the right choice.  Boiler, not bass.

Thank you. One of the reasons for me being here is to improve my forgotten school english☺

It comes over like something from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

"Hurry up or you'll be late".

"As in the late Arthur Dent".

The alien was not very good at making threats.

I am feeling sorry for the original poodle that inspired the expression. It sounds like he must have been disemboweled.

It was Goethe´s and Mr.Faust´s idea to harass that poor dog.

The thread got whimsical from the start, Goeth and Faust were operatic writers? In what sense was the dog involved?

Well - in Goethe´s "Faust" Mephisto (AKA Satan, the Devil, Prince of  Darkness, whatever you want), the Bad, appears in disguise as a poodle, the Good. When Faust recognizes the trick, he notices: "That´s the poodle´s core" . I´m not really saddle-proof in literature, but in Germany this came out a saying, meaning:
