NBD Reverend Triad

How are you finding it after having it for a while? How's the neck and what positions are you using most - I went to Glasgow especially to play a Decision P but it was the Triad that most impressed me (the Dub King had sold out)  - I bought the reverend Dub King later but having to sell as it's just a tad too small after playing 34inch - it was a toss up between that and the Triad  - I really like both the Korina burst and Periwinkle (cant decide) - the Dub King in natural (looks amazing wish it was 34in) has made me a Reverend fan - really great quality basses.

Is that an open question to the entire Triad crew?

Could be - it’s not as if I need anymore Triad GAS 😂

Well, to answer your questions the neck is lovely, satin finish on the back, I whizz around on it quite happily.  Positions is an interesting question.  I fitted a Freeway 10-way switch to give me more options (like combining pickups in series, using the first and third together etc.).  My favourite positions are neck pickup only, neck and middle in series, and middle and bridge in series.  Note that the second two are only available by modding - the stock five way switch is wired exactly like a Strat - N, N+M, M, M+B, B - all parallel.

I am not renowned for my liking of the bridge pickups, but the bridge pickup on the Triad is one of the few that have impressed me.

Thanks for comments. On my quick go in the shop - the neck pick up and neck and middle were really impressive- but back then I was after a p bass for the music I was doing. Just can’t decide between korina or periwinkle.

I'm neither a short scale guy, nor am I a semi-hollow guy either, at least not at the moment.  The music the band I play in cover makes the Triad or Decision P more appropriate.

I wonder how neck-divey those Dub-Kings are? No neck dive on mine - balances great on strap

I'd love a Reverend - just don't play enough just now to justify £1,000 on a bass! I'd probably go for the Triad too, but not a fan of the colours currently available. Enjoy it when it comes @Duroc17

Well hopefully it'll be my main bass for gigging band i'm in - or alternative to the fender jazz - it's on order now - so will see.

@Duroc17 I generally use the middle or middle and neck but sometimes use the neck only.  At the moment I'm just using a 5 string Charvel as the new band I'm in has a few songs that go down to D but its early days yet.  If I am going to be playing the fiver with this band I might treat myself to a Mercalli 5 string.

Got mine yesterday- shop put on some TI flats but DG we’re way too low and we’re buzzing but not too much through amp. So tweaked it. Played it for a few hours yesterday…

the good:

the clarity of the notes right up the neck

balance of output over the strings

very playable neck

lightweight and balanced great even in a slim strap

2 great positions straightaway- 1 and 3  seems like a P and a Ric - looking forward to rehearsals loud

the bridge is great

not so good:

about a 1mm gap between neck and body - see pic

I small ding in the neck at 7th fret

the fret ends though can’t feel them when playing just don’t feel finished - are these basses plex-ed?

also resting thumb on jazz bomb pups feels not that comfortable - might have to invent a small rubber whatsit to sit on it

the nut is everyone’s nut slightly angled? Seems like a good idea

I got a feeling tho after rehearsal it’ll be a keeper

Had this over the weekend - the playability is brilliant and so are the selection of sounds - i got more time to play around and immediately pos 1 and 3 jumped out but over time i've found i'm liking 2 and 4 as well - a lot of choice

The big downside to mine is the sharp edges on the the pickups - my natural playing position for fingers is right where the neck pup is - fine when playing plecturm which i do for my cover band - but it's really irking me and taking away from just playing  - i'm taking it to full rehearsal tonight up agains my MIJ Jazz (which has the best neck ever) and i got the Triad for the tone capability - I'm 30% thinking of returning it - unless it blows me away tonight - i'm bit torn on it as ergonomics is a large part of expression for me

Anyone else find the pickups bit sharp or do you get used to it?

I have only tried a Reverend, so no longer term experience but I do recall the pickups be very square, like you say.

If this was me, there would be three options:

  1.  Take a file/sandpaper and very gradually file the edges of where you play the most to get it to a point where it isn't bothering you.
  2. Get a zero-mod style thumb rest
  3. Return it and go back to the drawing board.

It is a bit unfortunate that the one of the big pros of Reverend is their in-house pickups, so you don't really want to change them out.

Hopefully this helps and you find a solution rather than having to return a bass you like 95% of.

yeah thanks mate, i think if it sounds great in the mix tonight - i'm keeping it and look to mod - our guitarist is a fixer of all things technical so he's bringing some bits of rubber along - ideally i'd find someone to make a thin casing for it - i have played it quite a lot over weekend as i had long weekend off

I hear what you're saying, and I must confess I found it unusual at first.  But it's no different to a '51/'54 P - they're also uncovered pickups so your thumb rests on the bobbin/flatwork of the pickup, it's just that the pickups on the Triad present a flat edge rather than the curve of the single coil P pickup.  I ended up really liking it - I moved away from feeling like my thumb was resting on a tightrope and it grew into a quite positive feel for me.  Just might take a bit of getting used to.  I don't even notice it now.

Cheers I’m going to stick a bit of electrical tape over the edge of the neck pup - can’t wait to hear it through main rig tonight
