Delberthot
It it wasn't live I would've said the jack socket but the only place I can think of down there it between an intonation screw and a string on the bridge. Certainly a bit different than the usual place under the E string at the headstock
cytania
Only one answer, he stubs it out on the jack socket and uses it as a plectrum. By golly this is musicianship at a high level...
OldGit
No ide where the ciggy goes - on the floor? Great economy of movement in McVie's style. Is he really Derek Smalls' twin brother?
MB1
MB1. ... Touch of the Dean Tavolaris there!
BigAlonBass
All joking aside, it's an old 'half-cup' handle from a kitchen cabinet, turned upside down and screwed onto the body! Not a modification anyone would recommend these days. (This very question was asked of him in an interview I read when I was just a lad)
chris_b
John McVie is the greatest. Unfortunately, like most of the bands back then he never recorded as well as he played on a gig. I saw John many, many times and he understated everything he played, except the extended solo he used to play on John Mayall's Parchment Farm. It's a shame that never found its way on to tape! Edit: I only ever saw him put the cigarette under the strings by the nut. Edited May 11, 2009 by chris_b
