Maple boards on a Jazz?

Just thinking, have Fender ever produced a Jazz with a maple fretboard? I can't think that I have ever knowingly seen one, they always seem to be rosewood. Or maybe it exists on a non Fender Jazz? Or maybe I just never noticed one.

But if not, why not? Would it give an interesting tonal quailty to a Jazz that's useable?

Yiiiiiiiiiip, but only with block markers, from the early 70s to the early 80s. (There's one or two exceptions around '81/'82, but they're rare).

Obviously, the relevant reissues have maple boards, too.

Lakland Jo Osborn and Daryl Jones Jazzes are available with maple fretboards.

The Fender Jazz Bass Standard, introduced in '83, had a maple touchboard with dot position markets as standard. And the '81 Gold Jazz Bass I owned came with a maple touchboard, again with dot position markers.

As for non Fender, Sadowsky seems to have favoured maple for touchboards over the years; certainly the case in the early '90s.

The MIA Standard comes with either a rosewood or maple board with dot markers. I used to have a rather nice one, which I ended up trading for a Thumb - pic here:

Hmm it's strange... I love P basses with maple boards but have always thought Jazzes look much better with rosewood boards.

I had a '99 USA Standard Jazz with a maple board and dot markers. Lovely thing it was too.

Perhaps relating, subconsciously, to the versions of these iconic designs as they first appeared - '51 and '57 Precisions, both with maple touchboard; and '60 Jazz, with rosewood touchboard.

The best look for a jazz bass in my opinion. My next bass will defo have a maple board. I love the way that the new mex fenders have the option of a maple board too, now its an affordable look for your bass rather than you having to fork out for an american made bass.

Here's one I sold a while ago. I got it from GAK. If you do a bit of phoning around you can generally find them. They just don't seem to be as popular as the ones with rosewood boards.

I have another of the 08/09 American Standards like Andy's above & mine's the 3TS/maple version. Principal difference is the rosewood boards give a woodier, warmer tone at the top end of the frequency, but the maples are much brighter and more percussive.

I know it's not a Fender, but you did ask about other 'makes' as well!

Mine is a refinished Fender body with a Shuker rock maple neck and birdseye maple fingerboard!

note, them knobs ain't the original equipment... that control plate assy is off a Geddy Lee that someone pulled to stick an Audere in.

I think that's my love. I feel very retro inclined when with a Fender...Being a real Fender or not lol!
My P-bass project really came a dream come true when the maple board replaced the Rosewood one.

Anyways, you can buy Maple boards from many parts companies now...Blank obviously so no use to a Fender.
Can't find 5-string 20 frets ones though and I'd love to if anyone can point me there. (Excluding Warmoth)

as we're posting different basses... mine's a mapleneck/jazz too and I have to say: I wouldn't go back to rosewood anytime soon!
