What has been your favourite band discovery this year? New or old band but new to you.

For me it's Brutus. I saw them at Arctangent festival and they blew my mind. Interesting and original metal music. The singer/drummer is one of the most talented people I've ever seen live and the rest of the band are great as well.

Brutus are cool. For me it's Matteo Mancuso. This kid is extraordinarily gifted. I might have to try to schedule a trip to see the wife's family if ever he plays down Sardegna way.

Definitely stop.drop.rewind for me. I first saw them when Facebook showed me their 'we write a Midwest Emo song in 60 seconds' video, a very funny and clever little insight into a quickfire writing process that actually turned out a great song. Having followed that, I saw some of the short videos that bassist Kris Lohn had made where he was showing off some Geddy Lee parts from tunes like 'Red Barchetta'. I was inspired to look more deeply into their music and found their brand of 'nerd rock' to be much to my liking. It's uniquely complex and yet simple at the same time, because the sense of melody in each of their songs is so strong. When you start to look a little more closely you'll see the intricacies in the music; all shifting time signatures, counterpoint basslines, amazing harmony and big hooks. I think they're absolutely awesome, just an insanely good three-piece making something really fresh and cool.

My fave discovery is Ren. Pure talent imho.

He's created a smart blend of music, theatre, indy film, philosophy and self help and...

I don't know quite what to call it except, It's Ren.

All done independently too.

Start here, then look into The Money Game (parts 1, 2 and 3) 😙👌

Full marks for Brutus

My fav band. Seen them 5 times this year.

They are amazingly good live.

I have never seen anyone else play drums and sing to such a high standard. I will definitely see them again next chance I get

Yes i wouldn't of thought it was possible for anyone to play to a technical level of a Neil Peart and sing at the same time. And have one of the best female rock voices....

And possess some incredible material.  "War" the obvious example. A top ten song written in any genre of music.

Their riffs are filthy.

Are sticks in Kent different to sticks from elsewhere?

Now that depends which side of the Medway you're from 😁

And bravo, I do love a dangling modifier joke

In Metal I stumbled upon Tribulation this year, Swedish metal but very catchy!

In Non-Metal I realised that many awesome tracks in cool movies were credit to The Heavy, catchy soul kinda stuff!

Hands down has to be Gaupa for me. I had no idea how much room I had in my life for the sound of Bjork does stoner rock.

I had not heard this before but just had a quick listen. I like it and requires further listening.

High Fade.

Love a bit of good funk.

Definitely the harder edge of funk. Will check them out.

Do you know this one?

Only one that is really new to me this year is Welsh band Church Village Collective (CVC). Lovely first single, looking forward to listening to the album I got today (yes, I'm old fashioned and like listening to physical sound carriers)!

Thanks so much for this. Sounds like a non-crap paramore! Will delve further.
