2024 Gear Abstinence Thread

I am 2nd Tier out - a purchase of a second hand Hiscox Lite Flite mandolin case.  Too good a price to pass up.

It doesn't fit my current mandolin, but I am hoping that it will fit the mandolin that I am intending to buy...

Edit - it does fit, apparently.

I'm pretty sure @Geek99 must have owned an amp at some point.

If he has previously sold it to keep the wolf from the door (or the enforcers from the church mice loan company at bay), but is now able to replace it and eat as well then

I say he is out, but would allow him to remain in, prioritising mercy over justice.

Thanks - yes ampeg combo plus p bass sold to pay a bill (latter a topic on here last year).

I had no other combo, amp or cabinet anywhere. Just a bass.

I would say that as the BC collective is generally a friendly bunch (yes you are), and this thread doesn't have any serious consequences (no prizes/awards at the end) then let @Geek99 stay. Absolutely the last thing I would want to do in any thread is to prevent a BCer from being able to drown out a geetard. 😃

The BC "jury" has spoken.  @Geek99, you're back in play.  The top of the thread has been edited to reflect this.

Normal rules of engagement apply from now on though.  For whatever that's worth, it's all a bit of fun!

Enjoy your amp and cab, may you annoy many neighbours with it :D

Bad example, strings are explicitly allowed in the exemptions.  Try another analogy?

Damn! That what comes of bowing to my liberal tendencies. I'm going to be Geek's second now. See you in the park at dawn, and we have chosen flatwounds at 700 paces.

It's probably for the best - I'll be dead but you'll have to fight Mrs. Neepheid for my personal effects and my money's on her :D

Would this be fighting MacAdder style with a baby in each fist ?

Just beware that this doesn't presage a slippery slope - "I had to buy a wireless as if I walked 10 metres from my amp with my 3 metre lead, I couldn't be heard".

A longer cable is a low-cost consumable alternative, and it isn’t like-for-like

I trust the BC massive to put the kybosh on frivolity such as this.  By the same token, I can sometimes be a meanie and a stickler when I offer my opinion on justifications and I appreciate the moderating force that they represent when I get a bit too "rule-y".

The twisting and turning, the "generous" interpretations of the rules are all par for the course, and I find them all amusing.  But it's not rocket science, you all know how it works, deep down, and this is as much an exercise in honesty as anything else.  Never mind honesty with the BC collective, honesty with yourself.

I'm out - I straight up reported it, no point in twisting around the whole "not bass specific" thing regarding the pedal I bought (don't get me wrong, the thought crossed my mind - but it would be supremely hypocritical of me as your opinionated thread watcher/tracker/dogsbody/gofer).  I bought a pedal, I did buy it for a useful purpose (and to make my life easier) but I didn't have to buy it, I'm going to use it with basses (as I don't own any other instruments) ergo it's bass gear therefore I'm done.  I've since gone wireless and already had huge fun with it at a gig, and I'm already making plans to shuffle my bass pack.  It wasn't meant to be this year.  Oh well, maybe next year!

If someone wants to cheat, no-one can stop them, and maybe the only person who'll ever know is themselves.  It's your life, you live it how you want to.  As I've said countless times, it's just a bit of fun at the end of the day.  The only prize on offer is your own sense of satisfaction that you made a promise and stuck to it, and the cash in your bank account that you didn't spend on gear.  You'll have neither of those if you cheat, regardless of whether or not it's reported.

You're all adults here, I'm not your mum! :D

Most of us are probably adults.

We're all extremely thankful you're not our Mum. I mean - just imagine the press coverage 😲

If we were to create a foot-operated device that took BC comments about purchases on this thead, and forced them through some sort of distortion,  compression and other manipulation so that the purchase could conceivably be valid under these rules, would that be a pedant board?

Bought nowt in 2023 and have almost got half way through this year, purchase free though twice I nearly succumbed, including last weekend in Bass Direct where I almost bought a pre-owned Musicman SUB 5-String White 2003 for £799. Some lovely stuff in stock at the mo'. I could've comfortably afforded it but I went home to re-think in the cold light of day and common sense won out.

I don't know what you mean.

M'lud, I have on two occasions partaken in the purchasing of musical instruments.

Both of these said purchases have been to further investigate musical avenues new to myself.

Without these instruments my musical studies of new avenues could have been brought to abrupt end.

It would therefore be entirely justified to make the assumption that both of these purchases were made purely in the interests of educational needs, and not merely cos they looked perdy...

... Maybe

I'm teetering on the brink as I need a new wireless set up. The Lekato WS80s I've been using for a couple of years are playing up intermittently when a bandmate uses her set (different brand but visually the same unit and set to different frequencies) and I'm considering a 'replacement' (technically an upgrade as they'll be the 5.4Ghz ones).

In my mind this is a replacement of a bit of kit that no longer works as intended, however a ruling would be appreciated before take the plunge. 😃

Sounds like a cheat if it's really your singer's dodgy one that needs replacing 😇

I'm still in. I should have bought a nice acoustic 5 string that was on here earlier in the year, but didn't and someone else has a fab instrument.

As I have only played once in 6 months I can't really justify anything else.  Possibly a set of IEMs next month.  Maybe. Meh...

That's me out again on tier two.

Purchases of a Strymon Big Sky MX to replace my original Big Sky, and a Metro 20 board and case from @Oldman

I'll still observe the fun though.
