Woodinblack
I certainly didn't, or would have shown much interest, even as a lover of theramins, but somehow, I had to sign up for this: https://stylophone.com/theremin-pre-order/
Al Krow
How much of that YT track was the unit actually creating?
Woodinblack
Im guessing not the drums and I would imagine there were multiple tracks and effects put on afterwards (although it has echo)
Woodinblack
But I am thinking a raspberry pi micro to do pitch to midi for an output
Count Bassy
Rolf would be proud. 2
Jean-Luc Pickguard
I briefly owned a Bond B3 Theremin a few years ago after finding it at a steal in the window of my local Cash Converters. I played about with it for a few weeks then flipped it on ebay for a decent profit. It was great fun playing the bond but it was obvious that it required a lot more dedication than I was willing to put in to be able to make anything other than space alien whoopy woo sounds. It looks like this one is designed to enable more useful sounds to be made lot easier. It would have been even better if there was some kind of filter on the control panel though. I have a friend who is very much into this kind of thing so I sent him the link when it came up on instagram yesterday. With a bit of luck he'll order one so I'll be able to have a go on it.
Woodinblack
I think the great advantage of this is the cost - I think they should have probably put a trigger out on in or some other interface, but that is not really what they are about. But build that into some filters and a bit of cheap hacking, and people are going to do great things with it!

There's also a Stylophone with a moderately capable synth engine (the Gen X-1).
Woodinblack
I think the theremin has the synth engine of the X1 by the look of the controls.

JPJ
I have no need for this. I already have way too much stuff. But I want this so bad 😂

Al Krow
A Theramin in the hands of someone who knows what they're doing. Super impressive! 3

Indeed - and that is what put me off getting one - I have a few insruments that I don't have time for, but until you try, you don't know if it would be fantastic or not so great. I can't really imagine doing mustang sally on it at the dog and duck. Crazy horses on the other hand... But this, at near £100, as a pure music making machine, I can live with that, and also lets me know if it is something I would like to do. I don't think you get many theramins at open mic nights

There are a load of a new variety on That Ebay at around £50, eg https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295896292092 (or £33 from AliExpress, https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004857001691.html). Woodinblack
Indeed - but that isn't a moog I had thought of those, and I also did think of the moog theremini, but it hard to see what it is like because if you look on a place where theremin players hang out, using a theremini is basically digging up Leon Theramin himself and using his body as a scarecrow, but a bit worse. Wonder what they will make of that. If this turns up it will be a fun thing at a price that is still in the fun area
Baloney Balderdash
I need one of these! Indeed a very manageable price. About the same price as a lower mid priced effect pedal.
StingRayBoy42
I'm selling my theremin as I never even touch it. 1
Cato
The Stylophone Theramin is theoretically available for pre-order as of today. Theoretically because the pre order page on the website has crashed and they've sent out an email to apologise but there should be a chance in the next day or so for anyone interested to put a pre order in. https://stylophone.com/product/theremin/ Edited August 8 by Cato
Woodinblack
The preorder is over, it is open to ordering. It takes a lot of refreshes but I ordered one in the end.
Cato
Managed to get my order in this morning. The website is still glitchy but I'm reasonably confident it's gone through. Currently saying delivery in 8 weeks, though as a first run, I wouldn't be too suprised if that changes.
Cat Burrito
I literally had a conversation yesterday with my bandmate about how neither of us want or need anything right now 🙈
BigRedX
I was really keen to buy one, but after the fiasco yesterday I gave up. This morning I had a long hard think and decided that I really didn't need it. Having said that I'm sure our synth player has already got his order in.
Cato
For me this is a relatively inexpensive toy (certainly relative to some of the instruments I've bought over the years) that I'm getting to scratch a long held itch. If I find a practical application for it that's a bonus. Edited August 9 by Cato
