The Birth of Loud by Ian S Port is a good read about the heyday of electric guitar and bass development and the relationship between Leo Fender, Les Paul, Gibson, Paul Bigsby, etc.

Jeez that's a weird book, it's mostly filth too, nothing about music.

Yep - as big a fan as I am of Mingus I had to stop reading it. It got to be more than self indulgent, shall we say. A shame. For the same time period (and beyond) I’d highly recommend ‘From Birdland to Broadway’ by Bill Crow.

I read the lot but left it completely confused. The only music biography I couldn't finish was Keith Moon's, what a horrible bar steward he was.
