So .... who are your fave bassists?

Just to offset the sausage fest somewhat, I'll just mention some of my favourite bass players who are also women. 🙃

Annie Holland - Elastica

Laura Kennedy - Bush Tetras

Ayse Hassan - Savages

Kim Deal - Pixies

Tina Weymouth - Talking Heads

Jenny Lee Lindberg - Warpaint

Josephine Wiggs - Breeders

A tricky and ever changing list, but I'd say...

Geddy Lee - Obvious. He's the guy the gods worship.

Jack Bruce - so good I named my dog after him.

Phil Lynott - the swagger, and he owned pick playing.

Lemmy - the attitude.

John Paul Jones - the consummate professional.

Jim Lea - staggeringly good bassist, composer, and multi instrumentalist.

Jet Harris - an early pioneer.

Paul McCartney - wrote the book on rock bass playing.

Marcus Miller- not my thing, but he good, he very good.

Geezer Butler - better than most players realise.

Most of the ones I'd name have already been mentioned several times. Not only that,  but it's hard not to like nearly all the names in here.   So I'll add;

Klaus Voorman

Tony Butler (Big Country)

Nice to see Colin Moulding getting some well-deserved attention.

The guy from The Doors

If you're not being sarcastic.... that would be Jerry Scheff on the later stuff. Fantastic bassist and no slouch (check him on the Elvis in Vegas footage).

Bruce Foxton - The Jam

JJ Burnel - The Stranglers

Glen Matlock - The Sex Pistols

Duff McKagan - Guns N Roses

I of course like and admire many others but those 4 probably influenced my playing more than any others.

Rather than picking the clever heroic ones, I've been more influenced by solid players whose groove, tone and contribution I've probably tried to emulate something from in my own way (not saying I've succeed mind you).

I'd go with:

Dee Murray (Elton John)

Duff McKagan (Guns N Roses)

Trevor Bolder (Bowie era)

Norman Watt-Roy

Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)

Gene Simmons (Kiss)

Aston Barrett (Bob Marley)

Also an honourable mention to whoever was responsible for the thumping bass lines and four to the floor drum beats in the electronic dance music I loved in the 1990s. Instilled in me the satisfying power of thumping away on a solid root note. Sometimes less is much more more.

I've read they had an bassist for studio recordings. I have always found The Doors a bit peculiar, nothing to hate nothing to like.

The final one on the LA Woman album was Jerry Scheff, best known for being in Elvis's TCB Band. He played that excellent Burnin' Love bass line!

Bruce Thomas's playing and tone on This Year's Model is amazing, and I feel like he's kinda underrated
