II don't even know if I would like a Stingray. I've never even played one.

You can never tell. I played a stingray, didn't like it. Played a bongo, loved it. Played an OLP, which is a copy of a stingray and loved it, so don't know if I like them or not, or maybe that first one just had a baseball neck.

Has anyone had a punt on anybody these fantastic chances to win a bass?

It's a very well constructed facebook page with seemingly good reviews and comments spelled correctly and from people in the UK.

Obviously they make their money from selling more tickets than the guitar is worth, so slim chance of winning.

Not sure if it's this site or another but the guitarist in my band has won TWO very good quality guitars and a headphone practice amp thingy in the last six months. Some of the competitions tell you how many tickets are sold so you know your odds of winning. He's won a Gibson Les Paul and a Fender US Acoustasonic. Not bad for £5 or £10 worth of tickets.

Just won a Boss Katana Go on Guitar Giveaway and it should be being delivered tomorrow.

I was hoping to win a Quad Cortex, but a Katana Go is nice too 😃

I have a punt if I fancy the instrument on offer but this amounts to a quid a month or something. It's nice to ponder the what ifs. I guess it's Communism. We all put in and one of us gets the goodies. Like National Insurance and the NHS.

I've entered two of the Bass Bros competitions, sadly didn't win either of them but I keep an eye on what comes up.

The better ones tell you how many tickets so you can see the do something like sell £1000 of tickets for a £500 guitar. The odds are then reasonable.

My mate only ever goes for the low ticket numbers where the tickets are reasonably priced rather than going for items he really wants. He does use the Marshall as his main amp now but didn't really need/want a new amp, just went for it because his odds were better.

For what it’s worth, I can say they’re definitely legit - I won one of their basses a couple of weeks ago!

it’s a Fender Made in Japan Limited International Color P-Bass. Really rolls of the tongue.
It’s absolutely beautiful in Maui Blue.  Came in less than a week from when it was drawn and is pretty much in perfect condition.

Looking at my account, I’d spent about £90 on various draw over the past year so I’m well up and should probably stop there…..

I played a few draws a week draw for a good few months but noticed the same names kept coming up as winners - certainly beyond the realms of good luck. I don't think anything illegitimate was going on, just some punters presumably buying a gazillion tickets in all the good draws. It put me off and I haven't bothered since.

I don't think our guitarist bought silly numbers of tickets and he'd won twice (a Les Paul and a Fender Meteora). If you look at the number of tickets available and the price of the tickets, you could buy the item for about the price of buying half the tickets.

There were names that came up much more than twice - the odds would have been astronomical for so many wins based on buying a reasonable number of tickets.  I enjoyed playing - it was a bit of fun for not much cash but it became so noticeable even Mrs Straker would say did such and such win again !

Well, if you had a shop which sold used guitars, and you put one of them into a raffle, and not all the tickets were sold, would you only put the sold tickets into the raffle, or would you put them all in and if an unsold ticket came up, say "take it away, Eric the orchestra leader[1]" and pass it back to your shop, saying Eric the orchestra leader had won it?

I was interested to see if the usual suspects were still winning more than a year after I stopped playing so I just checked the recent draw results and they are.

If anybody is interested look out for Clarke Abernethy and Robert Parfitt and see how often they win.  I'm not suggesting anything illegitimate is happening at all but would love to understand why these guys are so lucky. I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation.

Yup, the same suspects win time and time again.... because they buy so many tickets. They're addicted, it's fairly simple. I have also won a lot of good basses on various sites, mainly Guitar Gear Giveaway. The last one I won was last month, an EBMM Stingray (3EQ) in translucent orange. Prior to that I've had another Stingray (2EQ), a 3rd Stingray, a Rickenbacker 4003, Fender: American Jazz, Mexican Jazz, Aerodyne Jazz & a Telecaster, an Ibanez SR300, a couple of Squiers and an Epiphone SG.

For a couple of the above list I have collected them rather than having them delivered, so I've personally met the guys that run both Guitar Gear Giveaway and BassBros competitions, they're all thoroughly decent folks. And yes, they do try to sell around twice the instrument's worth in tickets, but they don't always sell all of the tickets before they're drawn - but they're true to their word in that they don't extend the 'competition' (raffle!), even if they're making a loss. They also have overheads to meet as well as paying themselves a decent wage, so I don't think what they're doing is unreasonable. The draws are done live on YouTube/Facebook/whatever, using google's random number generator - they're as open and honest as could be about it. I wouldn't be entering these draws if even thought there was a possibility they weren't on the level.

Nope, when they draw an unsold ticket they show onscreen that the ticket was unsold, and then they keep drawing more numbers until they find a ticket that DID get sold. Have you even watched any of these draws, before you start casting aspersions?

No, I haven't watched any. Fair enough, that's good to know.

Yes that's exactly what I assumed the reason was but it was enough to make me stop playing. It would be better if they had a max no. of tickets in any draw but I appreciate they are running a business so just need to sell as many tickets as possible and these big players are their lifeblood. I guess they will stick with the current model unless too many people get fed up with it or wrongly think something dodgy is going on.
