Noisyjon
The infamous bass drum mic question! My choice is the Shure Beta52 and a Shure SM57 together. I would also D.I the bass aswell as the POD just to have the variety of sounds available at the mix point, if there's enough inputs to allow this on the desk. Good luck, Jon. BottomEndian
If you've got one handy, the ElectroVoice RE27 is a beauty for kick drums and bass amps. And if you're miking up a cab, try sticking a mic on the port too (if you've got one). It can add loads of whump. It can sound gash too, so go easy on it! The Funk
Audix D6 - for actual bass drums, not sure about bass cabs. Pod has line level outs as well, so no DI required IIRC.

Hmmm... FTW indeed!
It is. Properly up to date bit of mic tech that. Frequency plot is ace, would love to have one for vox, never mind bass! If I was setting up a studio right now my current 'reasonable price' mics list is this:- Heil PR40 Heil PR30 Cascade FatHead 2 (stereo pair) AKG C 414 B-XL II (stereo pair) Neuman TLM103 Red5 audio RVK7 Drum kit microphone set (check their mics out - really, stupidly cheap for what they do, I'd use either the Fatheads or C414's for overheads) Some odds and sods (few 57s and 58s for when I need more) So yeah its a about three grands worth, but back in the day that would get you a vocal mic.... Sorry I'm a bit of a tragic case when it comes to looking for the best bang for the buck wrt mics Edited May 15, 2009 by 51m0n
WinterMute
The original AKG D12 is excellent, but the newer "egg" D112 is nowhere near as good. EV RE20 is excellent. Beyer M88 maybe. Got very good results out of a Neumann TLM170, but it;s an expensive vocal mic. Standard set for me at the moment is an M88 in the drum, an RE20 on the sound hole and a Yamaha NS10 driver in a 10" tom-tom case as a sub bass mic. You shouldn't need a DI for any of these mics, as they are already mic level, just go to the mic input and adjust the level at the mic amp. 51m0n
ONe thing that can be good to bear in mind is that it can be a bad idea to use the same mic on bass cab as kick drum Esp with a dedicated bass mic (a la D112), since they are designed to colur the sound (ie eq it), and the last thing you want is the same eq on kick and bass, quite the opposite in fact, using a different mic is a great way to start the process of frquency mixing the kick and bas together. Remember you can put back with eq what isnt there in the original signal tracked to tape....
