Regents on TOTP2 - what bass is this?

I've never seen anything like this before! Apologies for the murky shots, no good look at the headstock either.

 

Anyone know what this strange, mutant proto-Buzzard might be?

it looks like a lefty being played right handed to me, never seen that pickup config though, could be custom.

 

Is that back part actually part of the bass? looks like a handbag in some shots.

The closest thing I've seen to those pickups are on the Fender Hockey Stick 12 string

 

 

Although those are rounded and the ones in the TOTP pics look more square.

 

My best guess is that the TOTP bass is a one off, put together with whatever electronics and pickups the builder could get their hands on.

Not sure about a reversed lefty, the controls are right for a righty - might be an overshot lower horn a la Thunderbird (but not pointy).

 

I looked for the Regents on Wikilies, then googled the personnel, and on checking Damian Pew I found this Fretboard thread: https://www.thefretboard.co.uk/discussion/242110/bass-id-anyone. If anyone knows a good medium, they could try checking with Damian Pew himself.

It appears to share some parentage with this Japanese monster - released as Burns in Japan and Imperial in the States:-

That does look similar, not sure if the body shapes are the same though.

I can't find any pics of the bass version, but as luck would have it there seems to be a modern copy available - Pure Salem, a new one to me.
