Bass players are supposed to like octave right?

but through the old zoom multifx I had I was always non plusesed, I liked it even less when I had a hx stomp… and my idea of a SA C4 synth pedal as the be all and end all of effects on my board came unstuck when I couldn’t get a oc2 sound I liked out of it. Don’t get me wrong, recorded and listening back it sounded great - but it felt wrong, it was something about the attack and maybe a slight latency that made things feel really staccato or something.

which is fine, I don’t like octaves. I’m not mad on jazz basses either - but we are all different and like different things and that’s ok.

then my friend @jimbobothy admits to being a pedal addict. Now maybe there is support groups for this but the nice thing is he’s let me try a ton of analogue octaves over the years from the first markbass raw I tried which seemed nicer than what I was getting with the C4 … and mxr vintage bass octave which I hated- but they sounded different to the digital versions…

then unexpectedly won this on eBay - and it’s amazing, it sounds pretty much the same but I prefer it to the oc2 I’ve tried, it’s maybe more low mids focused, warm sounding, tracks to low D on a 5 string (!) and just lovely.

and like an OC-2 - just not quite loud enough - so treating it like an oc2 I took the -2 pot off, and tied the output to ground [note if you try this the input is on the wiper, not the output like a oc2) and it’s awesome - mid point on the direct level is now unity, the -1 is louder and … well who ever uses -2 with bass anyway?!

these things are mint!

Man I love them Oc10's 💪 .

They don't make them anymore , apparently sonicake bought them out... I use their sonicake Octaver, exactly the same imo and a stupidly cheap price. I bloody love it

I know - was a bit scary modding it as if I broke it they aren’t super easy to find any more! Comparing it to Jim’s octave collection was interesting, it was most similar to the OC2 but slightly different voicing….

You ever looked inside the sonicake?

My latest pedal... completely unplanned, I visited a friend who'd been messed around by a ebay buyer claiming the pedal he'd bought didn't work. "Here you have it" my friend said and thrust the returned package at me. Needless to say, it works perfectly! Not quite as strong a flange as the Boss pedals I've used but quite a nice sound.

Since taking the photo I've invested in a Mooer switch cap.

No , I can take a snap if you like ? But to me it feels louder than the Oc10 on minus 1 without dry

I used one of these for years. A great pedal, until it suddenly died one day 😔

Funnily enough I thought it had a much more dramatic flange than my Boss, but then that is bass-specific so the flange doesn't affect the low end as much.

It may be I've not learned to use it properly yet, I've not really had a chance to play with it properly yet.

Might have been cool to change the 2 pot to a filter, or add a dry on/off stomp switch there.

I was thinking about a switch for turning dry off, not enough space for a stomp switch.

I looked into a filter - that was the plan originally - but unlike the boss  this is a fraction bigger than 1590a and the parts you would need to hack into are smd parts under the jacks - so way too much dissasembly and risk of messing it up!

Also I just yesterday got the One Control Crimson Red Preamp, that I ordered from Thomann, but it is going back.

Mind it work flawlessly, and is a great piece of kit for someone who plays dub or reggae, or just really likes their bass super deep with subdued highs.

And the lows, while massive, aren't floppy at all, you can get some proper low end punch out of this.

Just not for me.

Here is what that looks like (mind just a random Google image):

9570566_orig.jpg

So I tried it out, but was kind of disappointed that it didn't work for me.

It did as advertised, but I thought it just didn't exactly fit for my use, like making everything sound a bit too rounded, and loosing clarity.

And I planed on sending it back, to get my money back.

However, for whatever reason, I let it stay, and just a couple of days ago filed it for a return with Thomann, and received a document so I could post it back without shipping costs yesterday.

I planed on sending it back tomorrow.

But then I decided to give it one last chance.

Sounded much better than I remembered from the first time I tried it, but still made everything a bit too rounded for my taste.

That is until I decided to try it out with my bridge J pickup, rather than my go to middle reverse orientation P pickup, and that actually sounded pretty great.

Then I decided to see what it would do to my 5 string bass, which have just one J bridge pickup, wired directly to the output jack socket, and damn, it sounds absolutely gorgeous!

Definitely not sending this back!
