Not a huge fan of the guy, but JHS pedals did a video recently on the costs of bringing a pedal to market, and he pointed out that original designs taken much less R&D than inspired by/clones of other pedals. Just thought it was interesting

Which is kinda ironic from JHS given their reputation…

the more important thing for cost isn’t as much the R&D but the cost of manufacture.

sourcing pcbs and population and assembly in the U.K. or China costs more. Living wage in Kansas city will be more than in China …

the thing to work out is if those wages then help fund a company who’s going to be investing in r&d in what’s not a massive market…

it’s a hard one though as I will quite happily build my own clone of a big muff rather than a £300 boutique brand  big muff

I'm not fussed about Demon FX or Behringer making clones.

They aren't counterfeit and pretending to actually be the original.

And they aren't people basically copying (but saying 'inspired by') old designs, changing something like a transistor or adding something simple like a clean blend, then getting their kids to paint it, calling it 'boutique' and making a big deal of 'made in UK/USA' then charging £300.

Got a Rusty Box for a good price. It was supposed to be the newer 9v version, but when it arrived, it was the older 24v centre positive one. Real pain to power and was about to return it but my mate wants it for his studio.

I get to create lots of captures on the Quad Cortex before I hand it over, though, so win-win!

How are you liking the SGT? I’m on the fence of getting one. In fact my wife offered to buy me a pedal of my choosing this Christmas(within budget ofc). I’m really loving the B15 tones I’ve wached in youtube but keen to know your opinion.

Willing to let go of my Neptunium and DCX for this

I’m pretty sure! Haha message me if you want it I’ll bundle it with the DCX if you are interested. My wife and I have a deal when one comes in one goes out so I can’t collect even if I want to. For practicality :)

I’ve been an ampeg boy anyway so I’m going back to ampy sounds

Going for B15 or SVT? You’ve got (or had) a Broughton fliptop too I think?

B15 is what I’m chasing. Yes, had the Broughton Fliptop for quite some time. I sold it after I bought the SGT after a bit of time with both. I wasn’t 100% sure whether to let it go; they are different. Even with the preamp of the SGT-DI set flat, when you engage the B15 SGT side, there’s quite a lot of high end roll-off.

The Flex feels closer to the sound of the Broughton Fliptop (though that’s from memory as I haven’t had it for a couple of weeks).

I’ve never played a real B15 so my perception of what sounds most authentic is only coming from YouTube comparison videos. The SGT sounded damn close in this one:

It’s at the end of the video.

I aquired this recently! An MXR Phase 99, two phase 90s in one enclosure. They can be run series or parallel (strereo setup needed for parallel) with one amp, it acts as a single phaser in parallel, series can be ran with different speeds, or a handy switch synchs them up, sounds really thick but adds a lot of extra boost. It also has the "script" switch which is labelled vintage on this pedal.

Ive yet to try it with my setup, im sure itll sound wild in parallel with an OC2.

There super close but have a slightly different vibe

They both sound excellent and definitely on the same ballpark as the Rusty Box. The bonus is that the boost is far more usable on these, the Rusty Box has such a big increase in level when you activate the boost its virtually unusable as anything other than an always on.
