Ok guys, I want to broaden my horizons musically and I'm looking to buy a few CD's.

What I'm looking for is some recommendations for good bass playing, stuff that might inspire me.

Basically I'm not fussed on the genre of music, be it Jazz, Motown, Rock, Pop, Blues, Classical, whatever...I just want to hear some good bass playing.

cheers guys :)

So far on my list i have:

Jaco Pastorius - Self Titled (or a Weather Report album if there is a better one?)

Go to laurie cottles site, download his live album (currently available for free download) then check out the track "quite firm" for the definition of groove... Oh yeah... And this is when mr cottle was a youngster. He's playing a Wal 5er on these recordings.

Billy Gould - Faith No More
Larry Graham - Sly & Family Stone, Solo
Geezer Butler - Black Sabbath
Verdine White - Earth Wind & Fire

A good way to cop some ace basslines is just to get the generic Disco/Motown/Funk boxsets that go cheap in HMV etc.
You can get the 3 CD sets for around a fiver, loads of top tunes on them. I bought a few a while ago and there's Chaka Kahn, Curtis Mayfield, James Brown, Rick James..... you get the picture!

Plus introduces you to stuff you wouldn't have heard otherwise

Yeah, good idea. I'll pick a few of those up when i next go.

Also guys, it would help me a load if you could just stick what genre of music the albums are you are recommending in brackets next to each one :)

I think you should get Spotify on your PC and have a listen to things first.
http://www.spotify.com/en/

Re Jaco:

Search for Jaco on Spotify and there's 150 or so tracks of him solo and with Weather Report (plus tributes and copies and stuff)

The Joni Mitchel Jaco albums are my favorite work from both artists.
His website has his work listed by collaboration. Here's the Joni ones
http://www.jacopastorius.com/music/essenti...onimitchell.asp

Try Hejira.

Pop the album title into the Spotify search box and you get the tracks and a review of the album.

You can't save the tracks to your PC but you can create a "playlist" and collect the things you want to find again easily or play in order.

Then when you have found the tracks you want you can buy the CDs (not from Spotify) That way you can listen to a large number of tracks before spending your money.

For more fretless wizardry try "Ne Parlez" by Paul Young (on Spotify) and Don Henley "Building the Perfect Beast" (not on Spotify, sadly) with Pino Palladino at his "Jaco for the masses" best.

You can also play"radio" according to genre and decade so choose "Soul" from the 60's and 70's and you'll get a random selection of stuff that includes lots of Motown with thier great bass heroes: James Jamerson, Bob Babbit and Carol Kaye. As a track plays you can see it's info and follow that up.

Have fun.

Richard Bona - Bona Makes You Sweat (live cd), amazing grooves, energy, playing, everything

Gabriel Nelson - Cake, any album, get them all (although he didn't play on the Fashion Nugget album)

Jim Creeggan - Barenaked Ladies, any album but probably 'Gordon' has the most 'chops' on it, great playing and phenomenal song-writing throughout their career

Lovely

Parliament - Mothership Connection (funk)
Donny Hathaway - Live (soul)
Bob Marley - Babylon by Bus (reggae)

Three of the best albums for bass playing ever. No argument. Bootsy (et al), Willie Weeks and Family Man.

Well, that's a list that'll take you 10 years to get through! Thank goodness for Youtube.

You get good bass playing on good songs/tunes. Have a listen to Keb Mo, Jon Cleary, any Motown, any Stax and check out Jerry Henderson in Phat Hat.

lol...what a fun thread:
Back in the day-Bootsy Collins (Rubber Funk) or Fred Wesley & the Horney horns albums with Bootsy on!
Familyman in Dub - Aston Familyman Barret (heavy bass dub reggae) or as said earlier Babylon by bus (Bob Marley)
Marcus Miller Live+1 (Jazzfunk)
Wingful of eyes (Mike Howlett from Gong...beautiful music) or Gongs 'You' album
Victor Wooten & Dennis chambers and some guitar guy, Geoff Howe i think...thats got some good bass going, bit technical for my standards though.
Highlight tribe (Techno with Live bass)
Backdoor ...if you can find an album (Drums, bass & Sax mashup)
Squarepusher..Drum n bass with live & sampled bass bits.
Any Culture or Burning Spear album...great reggae
Ozric tentacles 'Pungent Effulgent' think i've spelt it wrong, timeless space rockdubstergroovers-any 90's Ozrics is a good place for melodic bass playing
And finally any Kooks bass lines because when i listen to them i don't feel too bad on the bass. My good friend Max Rafferty lol...love ya Max (Booyaka) :)
The Nightfly album by Donald Fagen features Marcus Miller, Chuck Rainey, Anthony Jackson, Will Lee etc, and is a masterclass in playing exactly what the song requires.
Beaten to it, I was going to suggest virtually anything by the Dan so how about some funky Kenny Gradney Bass on Dixie Chicken by Little Feat? I met him last year, a very nice man!
