Satin or gloss nitro?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I want to make a Jazz Bass neck for a Fender Precision from the late 70's. I have already bought the neck, from Allparts, and it needs to be painted. The body clearly shows that it has been around for about 40 years, so I also want to make the neck look a bit old. I want to paint the neck with nitro, aerosol cans of this are widely available and it doesn't seem like rocket science to me. The result does not have to be like a Fodera and I have some experience with spraying, sanding, polishing etc.

There are many videos on how to proceed and what is needed, but I am still wondering whether I should finish with a satin nitro or high gloss nitro. The result in terms of shine and feel that I want to achieve is that of the Road Worn Fender series. I have a JMJ Mustang which neck I really like to play and also think it looks nice.

Is it a matter of applying a high-gloss finish and simply not polishing it completely? Or should a semi-gloss varnish be applied followed by a bit of polishing? Does anybody have experience with this?

See the bass in this topic from a fellow bassist for an example:

Thank you in advance!

I'd say gloss finish, then once cured take some fine (0000 grade) wire wool to it to rub it back. That can either give you a satin finish if you do it evenly, or a more roadworn look if you do particular areas.

If your neck is still attached to your bass then mask off your pickups (or better still the whole body) to avoid getting them covered in little bits of wire wool - it sticks to magnets ;)
