Name a Genre an give me your top 3 tracks from it

Recommended Posts

OK, I know that genres are a flawed concept, and that top 3s chop and change, but just for fun, and to possibly broaden my (and hopefully others) musical horizons, give me a Genre you love and 3 tracks that represent it.

Feel free to duplicate other people's suggestions.

Harmolodic jazz and its offshoots:

Heaviest!

Still with Jamaaladeen on bass, widdly wobbly and wonktastic!

James Blood, George Adams, Amin Ali and George Adams - Phalanx

Will check these out later. Can always expect something a little Off Piste from you Mr Smalls - thanks.

On Cynic's magnificent "Focus" album, to me "Veil of Maya" is still the begin all and end all.
I never get tired of it.

But now for some hardcore:
Easy listening!

Just the tiniest bit disappointed that James Last didn't make the cut!

Neo-prog.

Frost* - Black Light Machine

Porcupine Tree - Arriving Somewhere But Not Here

IQ - The Narrow Margin

Must give these a go - hoping someone will do a non Neo Prog suggestion, one Genre I've never really explored and really should (especially as I was once big into Jazz-Rock).

Twas not a choice against him though; I simply don't know his stuff, and chose Alpert simply because I could remember his name. The other two tracks have followed me my whole life.
Do you happen to know essential James Last tracks for me to visit?

Actually that's a bit of a problem as it wasn't so much about individual tracks with Last. His big success was with albums such as Non-Stop Dancing, and a whole James Last 'A Go-Go' series. Happy Heart was the only single of note.

You mean a prog suggestion that is non-neo?
In case:

Some demanding Gentle Giant.
IME this requires close listening, but gets better on each listening.

A pretty song by the mighty Van der Graaf Generator:
Other songs by them might be less pretty, but they're always expressive.

A randomly "chosen" song by Magma, live in 1977

This one wasn't written by drummer Christian Vander, the band's main composer, but by bass player Jannick "Janik" Top.

Stoner rock:

Bringing the "go big or go home" vibes, let's start with Kyuss and the superb Demon Cleaner.

From the sublime to the ridiculous (but fun), with Monster Magnet's Space Lord

And let's finish with the mighty Clutch, and Electric Worry.
