Earplug recommendations - ACS? Or something else?

Recommended Posts

Like a complete numpty, I managed to lose one of the pair of attenuating earplugs I’ve been using for years at last weekends gig.

I’ve had them so long I don’t even recall the make of them. I may as well chuck the other one 🤷‍♂️.

Browsing the web for suitable replacements has led me to ACS and in particular, these - the PRO17 Customs.

At ~£150, they’re not exactly cheap, but you can’t put a price on saving your hearing.

They seem to be the middle of the ACS range and I’m happy to pay the money, even if it does kick me out of the Abstinence Challenge.

I just thought I’d put a post up for any pros/cons for ACS and/or any worthy alternatives to consider.

Have at it Basschatters. I need to get something ordered fairly sharpish.

I have the PRO 17s and they’re very good, they turn my classic rock band from a band that really endangers hearing to a band playing at a volume not unlike that of a home stereo. Additionally unlike some cheaper ones you get a really good balanced sound through them, no focusing and removing specific frequency areas.

Thanks Lozz. That's just the kind of review for the PRO17's that I was hoping to get 👍.

The place we played last week was a bit cramped and I had what is quite possibly the worlds loudest drummer a foot to my left and a PA speaker a foot to my right.

I've used the ACS Pro17's for the last 15 years in a number of different bands and going to others gigs. For me the £150 per pair is THE best value musical equipment I have bought. As @Lozz196 says many bands (including one of the ones I'm in ) are a danger to hearing. My plan is that when I become unable to gig the ACS will have saved my hearing enough for me to still hear and enjoy my music collection.

No way will replacing ear plugs kick you out of the Abstinence challenge.

Even if they were a new purchase and you weren't replacing them I would make an exception for safety equipment.

Aaaaargh! I've just bought 2 new sets and didn't know this.......Ah well, they're worth full price anyway. 🤷‍♂️

Ah sorry man. Just booked my moulds to be done. Fortunately, the nearest place that accepts the ACS voucher is just 5 mins away from me.

They did mention that even though they are doing the moulds very quickly, ACS now have a 5 weeks wait time once the moulds are done.

Hope you get yours soon.

I got my replacement Pro17's about a month ago within 3 weeks of making the impressions so was pleasantly surprised as I was expecting the quoted 5 weeks. My Pro10's were only paid for last week. At least I'm not desparate for them. When I got the new Pro17's I placed them next to my 5 year old pair and could see the physical difference in shape 😮

. Pretty sure I'm using ACS Pro17s. Have had them trouble free for at least three years. The options with them are great, mine are bright orange and have my name on in case I drop them. The singer in an old band was struggling with severe tinnitus from years of playing in loud bands and I just thought "I don't want to be like that". In my first few sessions with them I felt a bit like I was cut off from everyone else but I got over it very quickly and wear them while watching live bands and in noisy public places. They're also great for kids parties!

I found it quite a struggle trying to find somewhere to have my ear impressions taken. After 10 minutes on the phone to Boots to find an appointment, I had to have it done in Keynsham and take a morning off work to do it. Bit of a faff!

Still, I had the impressions done yesterday and I've just had an email to confirm that they've got them already.

Thought I'd do an update. They turned up within three weeks, and I used them for the first time at practice on Monday. It's like a blanket was taken off compared to my old off the shelf earplugs. Totally worth it. Such a good investment.

What colours did everyone go for? I’m currently deliberating classic clear ones or something a bit more “jazzy”.

The clear gradually yellows over time.

My current set are neon green so they are easy to see if dropped, but I'll be changing it up to Red for right and black for left for the next set.

I perform in very subdued lighting and the text on the green colour ones is almost impossible to read once in that environment.

Fine if I have a green room/backstage area with normal lighting, but a nightmare if I have to get them in afterwards and can't tell left from right.

Also having them corded together is definitely worth considering (as in I wouldn't go without this option)

Let us know what you go for
