Anyone shot a Gig with a DJI Osmo Pocket 3?

Recommended Posts

DR = Dynamic Range (e.g. the ability to capture the shadows to the highlights. In difficult lighting conditions you'll compromise the shadows or the highlights (e.g crushed blacks or blown highlights). The higher the dynamic range, the better.

Thanks for that update, Dave. Excuse my ignorance but what does DR stand for?

Do you have a link to the magnetic mount - sounds like a good accessory to have!

Have you used it with the wireless mic, was thinking that may come in handy if the camera is being mounted on a PA pole?

As Russ has explained, it’s dynamic range. It’s still a small sensor but i do feel it’s better than my iPhone and other smaller sensor devices  I’ve had.
i record all our gigs as a multitrack in Logic so i haven’t bothered with the external mics. I believe they are 32bit float so should work quite well as you describe above.

This is the mount.

Fwiw, I don't think 1" is a particularly small sensor - I personally think it's pretty decent and good for low light/gig situations. Very few mobile phones have anything approaching that, and videocams with 1" sensors can easily cost >> £1k

I also really like the fact that, unlike normal cameras, the video recording time isn't artificially limited to 20 to 30 mins but can capture a full 1 hr set without needing to be reset!

Yeah, it’s a decent sensor. Not as sharp as using my R7, but a hell of a lot easier. In fact one of the reasons i got it was so i could hand it to people in the audience to use, without having to explain how it works. Just turn the LCD and it comes on and starts recording. No settings to mess with.

Saying that i do have some footage of the inside of some blokes nose 😂.

@dave_bass5 - starting to get seriously tempted by the DJI Osmo 3. The ability to set it up and leave to track the singer as they move around seems great!

I appreciate you're recording stuff directly from the desk Dave, but I wonder if I could ask a favour - would you mind recording an upcoming gig and strapping the second mic to one of the speaker poles, maybe pointed across stage to the other speaker(?) and see how good the quality of the sound is? I'm thinking that could be a nice compromise for situations where not everything is mic'd up and going through the desk?

Not sure what you mean by 'second mic', but all the videos ive posted on the Bands FB page (and mine) that were recorded with the OP3 have just the original audio from the camera. It seems to handle loud volumes quite well, much better than my GoPro.

This is one of those videos. Recorded from just in front of one of the speakers.

Yeah. I didn’t consider the Creator pack as i felt most of it wouldn't be used, inc the mic, but if you need that it’s worth it. I know that works in 32bit float so you probably wont get any distortion from it. I felt that two would be ok, but one might give a bit of a weird stereo image.

The DJI Mic 2 gets really good review though.
