Jonesy Posted March 4, 2024 Posted March 4, 2024 Here's a nice story...... https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-68440336 TL:DR - a band records a single in the 80s, but it doesn't chart and they disband. Fast forward to 2022, a DJ picks it up in a 2nd hand shop. Plays it in clubs that specialise in 80s music in LA & Paris, a record exec hears it and the band have just been signed. Maybe a record company will find my old bands MySpace page in 30 years time and I'll embark on a world tour...... 9 Quote
BigRedX Posted March 4, 2024 Posted March 4, 2024 After all that, it's a pity that the song in question is so mediocre and uninspiring, and considering that it came out in 1987, was on the cusp of being totally eclipsed by acid house, so not really surprising that it was totally ignored at the time. TheGreek Posted March 4, 2024 Posted March 4, 2024 Similar story with Jungle Rock - Hank Mizell back in the 70s. A forgotten track (sold 80 copies IIRC) which came good many years later. Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted March 4, 2024 Posted March 4, 2024 (edited) I purchased that Hank Mizell single back in the '70s Along with spinning rocjk boogie by Hank C Burnett . ( Bernett?) I don't know the story of those . I thought they were just retro singles , or whatever the term would be . 🙂 Edited March 4, 2024 by RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Quote
Guest Posted March 5, 2024 Posted March 5, 2024 Good grief. I've just turned 56 and I'm feeling it this week. The last thing I'd want is to have a demo I did in the 80s come to light and the buggers trying to give me a record deal now! That ship of opportunity has sailed for me. Quote

What if it comes with a nice 7 figure bonus? Quote

Little ray of sunshine! The music may not be to my tastes but it’s a lovely story nonetheless. 6 Quote

Unless I'm stupid, I've got enough to keep me in reasonable comfort until I drop off my perch without having to mime to my latest release on This Morning, or cut the ribbon at a new branch of HMV. Have it been in my twenties then it would have been a tempting dream, but now I'm in the Victor Meldrew phase of my life it'd be a blooming nightmare. I'd tell them to do what they want with the recording and give the royalties to charity. Quote

Marc S Posted March 7, 2024 Posted March 7, 2024 (edited) It may not be a great tune, and there may be countless "better" examples of 80's and electronic music out there - but the DJ and the record exec must like it, and after all, taste is an individual thing. Plus, it's also not the worst from that genre, nor that era. Best of luck to them, and this really is quite a nice story. If anyone finds the music I recorded around that time, I will deny I had anything to do with it furiously EDIT: Thanks for sharing this @Jonesy - it put a smile on my miserable old face anyway lol Edited March 7, 2024 by Marc S Quote
