5 string scale shapes

Recommended Posts

They are the same as you'd use on a four-string bass.

A five string maintains the 4ths - ascending - tuning of a four string bass.

So, a major scale starting on the 3rd fret of the B string - D - is the same shape as the major scale starting on the 5th fret of the A string - also a D.

I say 'Chapeau..!' to anyone actually learning any or all of these. Must have the memory of a troop of elephants. :|

There's not really any need to memorise them. It's easier to just learn what makes a scale major or minor. They're just a series of tones and semitones. Whatever note you start on is the root. Learning that - to me at least - seems a lot easier and worthwhile than memorising patterns.

I thought it would help with writing, especially coming up with fills and little solo breaks.

Indeed, I fully agree. (I'm a drummer. :) ...)
