Sadowsky preamp with EMGs?

Recommended Posts

I recently picked up a sadowsky metroexpress 4 and I'm looking to upgrade with a set of EMG. Now, the question is: can this be done? If so, should it be active or passive EMGs pickups to work with the existing sadowsky preamp? As I really only require the pickups, it will be a shame to discard of the EQ that all EMG pickups come with.

The pickups on the MetroExpress series are already excellent, there's no need to upgrade them, as well as upgrading the preamp is useless unless you want the VTC (funny name for a simple tone control).

I changed the pickups and the preamp on mine for the very expensive high end Sadowsky versions, and there's only a very tiny difference.

In fact, I even ended up putting an old real American Sadowsky preamp (the epoxied one) and here there's a noticeable difference.

But, as there's a but, you can simply improve the non existing shielding in the pickups cavity : it will be a great improvement over the original design.

If you insist on putting EMG's then you'll have to use the passive ones, unless you can use a soldering iron and change the volume and blend for 25 kOhms pots to work with active EMG's and the Sadowsky preamp (which is the same, except the MEC pots, on the MetroExpress series as on the high end iterations sold by Warwick/Sadowsky joint venture).

And EMG's don't come with a free EQ, but a tone control...
