What’s your home practice setup?

Recommended Posts

Ashdown EVOII ABM 500 combo and ex cab. A bit much for the front room maybe? Absolutely love the Ibanez Jet Star. A modest little bass for noodling at home, but a lot of fun, very comfortable to play and sounds fantastic, plus it was a gift from Mrs Rayman.

If I want to make a noise I have an Ampeg Micro CL set up. Just for the hilarious visual joke really.

Generally I have a small usb mixer plugged into the pc and practice with headphones.

As a general rule it's bass into Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, then direct out to headphones while also playing music from the PC where I'm playing along to stuff. I generally don't play out loud at home because it's a chance for me to have some time to myself so I don't want to disturb others. Ideally I'd like to get a wee practice amp, or a small cab to play through my Elf, but that's not something urgent at the moment.

I use either my Gus G3 or the Eastwood Hooky into my Helix with headphones. The choice of bass is down to which band I'm practicing for. I see no point in having a different bass and effects set-up for home use as the one I'll be using at gigs or in the rehearsal room. The use of headphones over my FRFR cab is simply down to noise considerations. I know the sound of the headphones well enough to know that what I program on the Helix will be very close to perfect when I get into the rehearsal room, and it's just a question of some final EQ and level tweaks. I also practice standing up as that's how I'll be playing at the gig.

If the house is empty, then whatever of my amps is closest to hand. If I’m being considerate (I do try…) then it’ll either be my Blackstar ID Beam and headphones, or my Vox Amplug / laptop / headphones and usually my Mustang bass as it’s easiest to sit down with.

Unplugged for me, just a bass. Either my Stagg short-scale acoustic bass or whichever electric is out on a stand. I don’t use any effects or pedals and I live in a very quiet house, so it’s fine for me. The only time I switch an amp on at home is to check things are working before a gig.

Quad Cortex into a QSC K12.2, Boss Bass Chorus on an FX loop.

Also my rehearsal rig.

Also my recording rig with a Shelford Channel as a DI.

Pedalboard, can either take headphones straight out of the Monomyth, or I can additionally use a Yamaha Sessioncake if need aux in.

Sometimes, I use a USB audio interface into the laptop if I'm learning stuff off computer.  Bass straight in, headphone monitor out.

Doubles as a rehearsal space for our blues band as well as my practice space for bass and drums. Also got a sofa against the back wall for chilling out on.
I run everything thru an XR18 and LD Systems speaker plus it’s all connected to the laptop so we can record rehearsals.

At home i use my Aguilar tone hammer 500 for the tone i want, with a volume down, from balanced output to focusrite scarlett 2i2 then to my pc (samples and recording) and use headphones from scarlet for hearing what i am doing.

It depends.

Generally I use an Orange Crush 50, no pedals.  I have Alexa piped through the hifi and practice against whatever choon I choose.

Less often its through the Tascam GB10. I used to use that all the time when working away, but it now only tends to come out if Mrs Bassfinger is working from home.

And occasionally though a Behringer interface and into the computer, output via Preonus speakers. I tend to do this if playing with effects or recording,

I don't understand the question.

What is 'home practice'? 😉

I was going to say the same thing - although I do use my pedal board through an Aguilar 350 and into whichever cab is easiest to get to if I need to work something out prior to a gig/practice.

Mind you my home "guitar" rig is the opposite extreme - possibly compensation for never gigging on guitar!

No amp for home use. I go bass into backbeat G2, into pedalboard then into VB99 which is linked to computer and a TecAmp bassboard, then take headphones out of the VB99. Sounds and feels amazing, better than using an amp and bang on my studio sound with all the feel of a rig behind me.

I don’t really consider it a ‘practice’ setup because before I was in my current band and even now I do most of my playing at home along with tracks. It’s my go-to setup for most of my playing as opposed to a compromise over my live setup.

Usually it's bass of choice into the B6 along with an mp3 player loaded with the songs I'm learning into the aux in, and headphones. If I'm trying a new sound/patch I'll plug in to an amp and cab - usually the TCE BAM200 and either a TE 1x10 or my homemade 1x12. I'll wait for the neighbours to go out before turning up the volume.

Same as my band jam/rehearsal and live "amp-less" setup.

My main idea with this being consistency of tone regardless of whether I rehearse at home through headphones, at band jam/rehearsal through a PA speaker, or live through a PA system. :

Quote

My entire signal chain explained in written form  (currently in the process of rearranging my setup, following is the most likely outcome) :

(*pedals listed in [ red/bold/underline text ] are "always on" effects*)

5 string 28.6" scale Ibanez GSRM25 Mikro Bass (equipped with an EMG Geezer Butler P pickup, and strung with Elixir Nanoweb coated nickel-plated roundwound hex steel core guitar strings, gauge .080 - .062 - .046 - .036 - .026, tuned in tenor bass, G standard, tuning, that is as 3 half steps above the 5 upper strings of a 6 string bass in regular B standard tuning) ->

->> XVive Undulator (tremolo pedal, but never actually engaged and used exclusively for its great buffer) ->> EHX Black Finger (tube driven optical compressor, with 2 preamp tubes operating at proper high 300V plate voltage, mainly used as a tube preamp stage, driven to just at the edge of the tubes's breakup point, but with some very subtle compression dialed in as well) ->> TC Electronic Sub'N'Up Mini (used exclusively for an 1 octave up effect, delivered by a custom made Toneprint, dialed in to mimic an 8 string bass/12 string guitar, to fill out more sonic space, mostly used in conjunction with my high gain distortion setup) ->> DigiTech FreqOut (feedback generator) ->> Boss LS-2 [A+B Mix <-> Bypass] (parallel effect loops mixer/switch) ={ [Loop A Send] ->> Monarch MFL-22 Stereo Flanger (sometimes stacked into the HoTone tremolo in front of it, and always mixed with either clean signal or the Behringer phaser from parallel effects [Loop B]) ->> HoTone Trem (tremolo, sometimes used with the Monarch Stereo Flanger behind it stacked into it, and always mixed with either clean signal, or sometimes the Behringer VP1 Vintage Phaser, from parallel effects [Loop B]) ->> [Loop A Return] ->|+|<- [Loop B Send] ->> Behringer VP1 Vintage Phaser (clone of the original big box EHX Small Stone phaser, used with Color switch engaged for deep sweep and high resonance/feedback, and always mixed with the Monarch MFL-22 Stereo Flanger from parallel effects [Loop A]) ->> [Loop B Return] ([Loop A] + [Loop B] mixed at an approximate 50/50 ratio) => [LS-2 Output] }=>->> Boss LS-2 [A+B Mix <-> Bypass] (parallel effect loops mixer/switch) ={ [Loop A Send] ->> Mosky Black Rat (RAT clone, in Turbo RAT, LED diode clipping, mode, quite raunchy, fuzz-esque, high gain distortion, always used mixed with the {Orange Juice -> Metal Zone} from parallel effects [Loop B]) ->> Behringer SF300 Super Fuzz (Boss FZ-2/Univox Superfuzz clone, octave fuzz, always mixed with either clean signal, or {Orange Juice -> Metal Zone}, from parallel effects [Loop B]) ->> [Loop A Return] ->|+|<- [Loop B Send] ->> Joyo Orange Juice (Orange amp like overdrive, dialed in to deliver a low gain overdrive, always used stacked into the Boss Metal Zone in front of it, and mixed with the Mosky Black RAT from parallel effects [Loop A]) ->> Boss MT-2 Metal Zone (distortion, dialed in at a rather moderate gain setting, always used with the Orange Juice behind it stacked into it, and always mixed with either the Mosky Black Rat, or sometimes the Behringer Super Fuzz, from parallel effects [Loop A]) ->> [Loop B Return] ([Loop A] + [Loop B] mixed at an approximate 50/50 ratio) => [LS-2 Output] }=>->> Zoom B1Xon (used predominantly as reverb unit, with various different reverb patches, including the always on {very subtle Plate Reverb -> subtle Spring Reverb} reverb patch that is part of my basic "clean" tone, and an extremely thick, lush reverb patch, used as a pad effect with volume swells from the build in expression pedal, though also used for a couple of additional effects, including a prominent "wah" pedal patch and a trippy reverse delay patch) ->> Danelectro Fab Metal (post reverb high gain distortion, often used stacked into the Orange Juice in front of it) ->> Joyo Orange Juice (post reverb medium gain distortion) ->> NUX Tape Core Deluxe (amazing digital emulation of the legendary Roland RE-201 Space Echo tape delay) ->> Behringer VD400 Vintage Delay (clone of the Boss DM-3 Analog Delay) ->> Boss LS-2 [A+B Mix <-> Bypass] (parallel effect loops mixer/switch) ={ [Loop A Send] ->> Joyo Oxford Sound (clone of the Tech 21 Oxford, which is an all analog emulation of an Orange Amp type preamp, dialed in to deliver a low gain overdrive, always used blended with "clean" signal from parallel effects [Loop B]) ->> [Loop A Return] ->|+|<- [Loop B Send] ->> ([Loops B] empty, used to blend in "clean" signal) ->> [Loop B Return] ([Loop A] + [Loop B] mixed at an approximate 50/50 ratio) => [LS-2 Output] }=>->> NUX (NBP-5) Melvin Lee Davis Bass Preamp + DI  (loaded with a digitally emulated Aguilar Tone Hammer amp, and an Ampeg SVT-212AV IR cab simulation, with a subtle low gain overdrive blended in at a 50/50 clean/drive ratio) ->

->> ART Tube MP Project Series (tube preamp and DI, with build in HPF, fixed @40Hz -12dB/Oct, engaged, tube driven to just on the verge of breakup point->

// ->> Band rehearsal/jamming/gigging  // ->> Home practice // ->> Home recordings //  :

// ->> Band rehearsal/jamming/gigging ->> Effects Return (poweramp input) of a Peavey Solo Special 112 (160W combo amp, with the build in speaker disconnect and instead hooked up to a passive PA speaker) ->> The Box PA 502 (passive full range flat frequency response PA speaker with 1x 15"  woofer/mids driver + 1.7" high frequency tweeter horn (crossover 2.3kHz)) // ->> Home practice  ->> The T.Mix Mix 502 (mixer) ->> Sennheiser HD 380 Pro (studio grade, that is FRFR, headphones) // ->> Home recordings ->> M-Audio Fast Track (audio interface) ->> Reaper (DAW) //

Though my Sennheiser headphones are dying, and are currently held together with tape, after over 20 years of faithful service, so for rehearsal currently I use a set of ultra cheap Behringer studio headphones, the BH470 ones, which are actually surprisingly decent.

They do not have quite the same clarity and neutral flat response as the Sennheisers, there's a bit of a boost of the lower frequency spectrum and they lack some detail in upper frequency range compared to the Sennheisers and reality, as you basically get with all cheap headphones really, and I wouldn't use them for producing music/mixing, but they do actually work really well for rehearsing bass.

So if anyone's on a really tight budget and need a set of headphones exclusively for practicing bass I can warmly recommend the Behringer BH470 studio headphones.

Also I don't have a photo of my current setup, but here's at least a shot of my current main instrument of choice (old shot, and the fretboard has darkened quite a bit since this was shot, and also taken on a browner hue, as Jatoba tends to do over time when exposed to sunlight):
