What’s your home practice setup?

Living room sofa noodling - whatever bass is close through a zoom B10n multi FX and some cheap headphones. 

 

Proper practice - bass through my pedal board, into a Behringer audio interface, into a Mac, with Amplitube 4. Output is usually some Shure monitoring headphones, but I also have studio monitors, but prefer the headphones. 

 

I rarely practice with my amp at home; crappy terraced house.

Thanks Simon! I might need friends to help lift it into my practice space, but once it's there it can stay there. I've always fancied a Marshall stack, but lately Trace Elliot has the edge for me I think.

I have options:

(1) DIY Ampeg B15 clone into BF One 10;

(2) Two Notes Torpedo CAB into my studio monitors; or

(3) Origin Effects Cali76 Compact & ‘64 Black Panel into studio monitors.

 

I can report that none of the above sound terrible!

For silent practice, iPad Bluetooth into Spark Go with headphones for playing along to stuff, especially the garage band drummers. 

 

Otherwise a PJB BG75 for low volume, or an RM 800 Evo ii into 2 x 112T if the wife and neighbours are out.

For many years I could only afford a single amp/cab and as a consequence was always lugging it around so weight mattered. But the recent proliferation of cabs that are cheap because they are so heavy has meant that for less money than a single Barefaced cab I have got six (yes six!) TE cabs that I simply leave in places where I play - so as of this week the 4x10 in the picture above will now live permanently at home next to the piano, I have another 4x10 (TE GP7 combo in my thumbnail) that lives next to the drums at church that I share with the other bass players (and indoctrinate the teenagers on the merits of 80/90s gear), then a totally impractical 2x10 and 1x10/1x18 stack loaned to a friend with a big house in the country where we can practice (he also makes amps so we use it to test his latest creations), and then a second 2x10 & 1x15 stack that is currently under a stairwell at church but is the most "portable".

 

I'm not sure if mine is a unique approach, but I get a distinct level of satisfaction scattering heavy TE cabs around the neighbourhood. My only fear is if people ask me to move them.

I think it might not be appreciated if I left a TE cab in every pub I play in.

For me it depends on what bass I’m using. My fender and Stingray basses I use my ampeg b-100. My Status and Overwater bass I like the PJB amp.

Possibly my fav rig of all time, just a bit old and heavy these days but it sounds so good.

Depending on how i feel will decide what bass i use but usually its my Geddy Jazz or Godin PJ with occasional Warwick Thumb when i fancy something special.

I've been using my Blackstar Amplug 2 recently.  With headphones on you can still hear a recording and play along. Sounds surprisingly good, (especially for slap so I think it may have some compression built in).

An update to my practice gear.  I don't have anything set up, I already monopolise enough space with a dozen basses!  So, because I don't have a permanently set up practice rig, this is me in order of laziness:

 

1) Epiphone Jack Casady acoustically with laptop speakers - this actually works better than you might think.

2) Yamaha Sessioncake headphone amp + aux in from laptop/phone + whatever bass

3) TC Electronic BH250 (toneprint for FX) + bluetooth receiver for aux in + whatever bass

4) TC Electronic BH250 + Pedalboard + bluetooth receiver for aux in + whatever bass

5) TC Electronic BH250 (toneprint for FX) + Markbass NY121 cab + bluetooth receiver for aux in + whatever bass

6) 5) TC Electronic BH250 + Markbass NY121 cab + pedalboard + bluetooth receiver for aux in + whatever bass

 

I rarely venture above 3...

I made a new year's resolution to tidy up the nest of cables, plugs and musical doodads that was filling up my attic. It took a while, but I've consolidated everything down to a few shelves next to my desk (which, I have to admit, doesn't help me keep focused on zoom meetings).

I'd been working on a layout that involved a sort of patch bay unit with dozens of jack sockets front and back routed to a bunch of rotary switches, but after I got the Trace Elliot GP11 from @Skinner, I realised that it had outputs enough to do everything with the green box. I can plug an instrument into the GP11 and have it to through effects (in the FX loop) and then on to either my bass amp (with home made cab), my home made valve amp/cab, or my computer interface. Or all three at once.

 

Now I just need to re-cover the manky tolex on the valve amp with brown faux leather to match the other components.

Over here it looks like this:

 

The basscab contains a JBL K140 speaker. The amping is a selfmade Basspreamp (FET preamp similar to Trace Elliot into a modified API 553 EQ circuit) and a KMT DC5 poweramp. The Ampeg Jet is used for my piano (late 70s Yamaha CP30).
