Can anyone suggest an effect which would simulate a bell?  Does it need a synth and/or sample, or is there something I could buy off the shelf?

Thanks :)

What sort of bell?

There's a wide gap in sound between what's on a cat's collar and Big Ben.

A church bell or hand bell.  Something a bit less cracked than the Black Sabbath bell, but that sort of bell.

TBH the best way to get exactly the bell sound you want is to sample it.

What is this for? A recording or live use?

Is it a free-form intro or does it need to be synchronised to certain points in the song and in time with the other instruments.

I'd make it the drummer's problem... Sounds like something metal needs to be hit with something else. Or, if your drummer has a sample pad or any kind of electronic drum kit it's easy enough to do.

Great point!

Does indeed sound like the drummers work.

That is at least if such is involved in the musical project in question.

We used to do "Hallowed be thy name" by Iron maiden and our drummer rigged up a little sample pad with the bell sample in it for the introduction. Can't remember the exact make and model, but I don't think it was particularly expensive.
