Oscar South
The bassline is as simple as it gets, just roots, fifths and a few chromatic approach notes. its just a 16 bar blues, get the chords from somewhere (can prob get em from one of the links in this thread) and figure it out. OutToPlayJazz
Yes, just checked - The version in my pads is in F Major, but the original is in C Major. Which would you prefer, Andy?

OutToPlayJazz
I seem to remember having a sheet music version somewhere that was in Bb, but I don't know what the original key is. If it is Bb, just move a couple of frets down from the C version. That'll sort it. This is the problem with standards, there are so many versions in so many different keys! I had to play 'Don't get around much anymore' last night in Db due to some girl singer only being able to do it in that key! Sorry if it's a bit scrawly - I just wrote it out and scanned it this evening! I find I can write music faster than I can input it into Sibelius Edit: Just listened to a couple of excerpts on iTunes of the Hancock versions. Seems he usually did it in F! OutToPlayJazz
Btw, the above transcription is a simplified version of the bassline I've always played for 'Watermelon Man.' I'd never heard the original when I started playing it, so this is just my take on the song, but it fits really well. I still use it as well!
