IK Multimedia ToneX One, anyone?

Recommended Posts

I am guessing if you have the feedback it has defaulted to using the microphone or something?

I haven't tried to put sounds in yet, there is so much going on, I am hoping to get to it later, but I don't think I will be gigging it just yet :)

I use it behind a Mod Dwarf. The dwarf tends to more pedal effects rather than amps.

So you go into the dwarf and then the output of the dwarf goes to the tonex? That sounds like a good plan, currently I am back to gigging witth he dwarf but I find its switching quite slow (between patches), if the dwarf was doing effects (and keyboards) and the tonex was just doing the amp, that would be good.

Do you have to restore your purchases every time you restart/start the Tonex software?

I also appear to have only 15 tones/presets to choose from in the whole library without purchasing add ons?

Not as far as i can remember. I have the three button version and there are loads of presets.  I've just set up the first six slots for my Telecaster and the second six slots for my bass. I didn't download much from memory and having the three switch version for some 'boutique' sounds that I suspect I'll never use.

I've hooked it up to Mac and Windows and whilst the interface is a pain when all want to use is the pedal, it appears that I have to have Amplitube as the authentication for Tonex. I did not have the feedback issue you had. The software has a poor interface but it does work at least for me.

I think you should have all the hundreds of presets I have, that's my understanding. You should also have lots of downloads as you've brought the hardware. The free version of Tonex has a restriction of 20 downloads from memory (that's ever!).

I'm away tonight so can't check anything out.

However I can say that I do like the Tonex. I use the software to set it up and then ignore the laptop. I have no idea if it's accurate but it sounds great to me plugged into a Yamaha hs7 monitor. I've never played a 57 Bassman wish I could.

That's one way I use it. I'm also trying to work out how to use midi to totally control it so I can switch both units from a single foot switch. I haven't got a band to play with (sob) so it's for my personal interest.

I'm back from London end of week so will try and show what I'm doing if anybody has the slightest interest

I had that, and it was annoying me a bit after I connected to the pedal, so I went to the tonex website, logged into that with my ikmultimedia account and then went back to the tonex software and I had everything there.

Whatever you think of it seems that IKMultimedia will have though of a way of messing it up before you get there!

The modelling / Librarian app is ToneX CS - not Amplitube, which is a standalone system that works with any audio interface.

In ToneX CS, when getting started with the One, I recommend you use the Librarian only and set the app's audio inputs to "None" in Settings. That way you can be sure you're hearing only the pedal, whatever you do. When you get better, you can try creating presets in the app, which requires the settings changes I've mentioned a few times already!

The factory bass presets are kind-of limited, but then you have loads of free community models through ToneNet. I'm trying out a JHS Colour Box model at the moment, which is a kind of vintage mixer channel that can be pushed in to distortion.

The ToneX CS interface is just bad, frankly. I'm getting better at it. When the pedal is connected, you have three sections on the right, top to bottom, and can drag & drop between them.

  • The pedal's slots (3 on the ToneX One).
  • The presets stored on the pedal (20 on the ToneX One)
  • The app's presets or tone models, depending on what you have selected in the left side column. It can be Presets or Tone Models, with a Preset being a Tone Model (stomp gain / amp / cab combo) plus the extra bits (gate, compression, effects etc.).
  • You filter the contents of the bottom box using the bottom left e.g. Bass for just bass presets, "Owned Only" to not show anything you don't already have. The Colour Box model was classed as "Owned" after I downloaded it to the app.

The software is very very irritating. IK multimedia have made it very difficult to do anything at all. It's difficult to remember a piece of software so cumbersome to use. Then I think about  the England RUFC and their Game Management System software and think I'm blessed with Tonex 😊

At the minute I'd like to adjust / manipulate one of the presets but can I hell simply turn settings up/down and hear changes in real time.

Is this on the pedal or in the application?

As @bntsaya just use the librarian section of Tonex. I set the pedals up and do everything there. However I do very little in the pedal apart from volume and gain. I'm quite simple about this stuff

I posted about this before, let me add some screenshots. ToneX CS is like two different apps: a Librarian for managing the pedal, and a full tone model / preset creator like AmpliTube. I think these should be two separate apps - it's causing unnecessary confusion.

If you are using the pedal as the audio interface, and want full control for creating presets, you do it only in the app and bypass the pedal's processing: stomp mode, bypass, and disable direct monitoring. Or use a different audio interface.

You have to enable audio in the app as well:

Then the opposite settings (with Input Device: None) if you want to listen to the pedal only, while running ToneX CS as the Librarian.

If you select Windows Audio as in the first screenshot, can you see the ToneX as an Input Device?

I'm not up on the current state of Windows audio, but if you installed the ToneX ASIO driver (in IK Product Manager under your pedal in the Hardware section), it ought to be usable. ASIO used to be the only way to get low latency, though I'm told that Windows Audio has improved in recent years.

Irritating to say the least that when I went back through the settings for a 3rd or 4th time it suddenly had the tonex option in the drop down!  I changed zero while cycling through the options but it changed any way!

Lets see how we get on now!

Ridiculous/Ludicrous system.  I decided that as I had a better grasp of this and I wanted to practice what I had learned that I'd apply it to some presets for my acoustic guitar... having none of it and it has asked me to reinstall the Tonex set up!

<edit>

The software has now crashed 3 times while I've been browsing; laptop is barely 12 months old so not ancient.

Is what it can do when it works worth the hassle?

Nothing is worth that hassle!  :)

TBH I've come to the conclusion that a good analogue preamp is pretty much all I need if I'm going to be sending the signal to a PA or FOH.  Speaker IRs, captures etc are all just variations of EQ... so just EQ the bass tone and be done!  I wanted to be able to have a good preamp tone with a few effects added for individual songs, all in 1 pedal but it's no big deal if I have a preamp pedal and a good effects pedal; 2 pedals isn't exactly a hassle.  Plus I have my IEM transmitter on my pedalboard, so long as they all fit I'm happy.

Is it really that bad? I ask cause thomann had a problem with my bank transaction 😅 so now I need to do a bank transfer

Nothing is intuitive, I had to reinstall twice (in 3 hours), I had to reload models/presets 'purchase' (even though they were free with the pedal) each time I restarted the pedal, I also had to scour tutorials to suss that you couldn't listen to adjustments 'live'.  You have to play through an alternative interface or if using the pedal you need to bypass the pedal, disable direct monitoring AND enable a setting in the app... none of which is explained in any lit from Tonex; thankfully helpful people like @bnt et al have been through this and helped.

I don't own a audio interface, I was hoping to use the tonex one as one.

Is that still doable or is it a world of pain?

I posted about this earlier: works great in general if you bypass in stomp mode and disable direct monitoring as mentioned. Then it works like a typical interface, you hear only what comes back out the computer. Some iPad apps don’t work, due to sample rates I believe.
