Barefaced Clarity

Recommended Posts

Ok folks and users of BF cabs

Between the 12’s and the 10’s which has the better clarity of note ?

I’ve ordered a BF310 which I understand is warm and vintage but I’m thinking I should have gone SuperTwin ?

Playing rock mostly and I need clarity and depth and I’m wondering if you ST owners would agree it’s better choice ?

I will be using the TE1200 amp with a PBass fingerstyle and RW strings with a clean tone

I`ve had both, and certainly the 12s have a greater clarity on the notes but for me after a while I found this to be a bit sterile sounding so moved to the 10s but annoyingly I couldn`t coax the aggressive highs from them that I wanted, it was a case of near but not quite, so I went back to the 12s.

Bear in mind my sound was like a cross between Lemmy, Duff McKagan of Guns N Roses and JJ Burnell of The Stranglers so I was after a lot of aggression. For anything other than this I`d choose the 10s over the 12s, as to me they have more "bass cab character".

I had 2x210s and moved them on. One of the reason for this is because I thought they lacked clarity - seemed a bit dark sounding, so they weren't for me. I thought they would really benefit having a tweeter.

On the plus side, I thought the other claims were true. Extremely well made and plenty loud enough.

Both will be great.

As I said before, buy a Barefaced cab and discover what your amp sounds like. If you don't like the sound it's not the fault of the cab. You need to buy a better amp.

I used to own 2 Two10's and 2 Super Compacts. I had no issues with the sound of either, and after a year of gigging I settled for the SC's. . . . they were lighter and a better fit in the boot of the car.

I suspect you'll probably be happier with the SuperTwin if you want clarity. The 10s do sound fantastic but they are definitely coloured in tone which to be fair is what they are meant to be. When you get your SuperTwin be prepared to start again with your amp EQ. That TE1200 is unbelievably clear through a SuperTwin so the EQ settings you use with whichever cabs you currently have won't necessarily be the ones you'll use with the ST. Also, bare in mind that the speakers need to be broken in over about 6 hours of playing at reasonably loud volume, they will basically get clearer and clearer whilst being broken in and then you'll have the true sound of that awesome amp and the cab.

Yes I decided the ST would be more my thing and I can tweek my EQ but I couldn’t add clarity if the cab was warm and vintage ( 10’s ) so a true clear sounding cab is a better fit.

Now I have to be patient while they build it !!

Yeah the tens are "this cab sounds great" and the twelves much more "this cab doesn't sound of anything". Within reason obviously.

I'd say more that the 10s are 'this cab sounds great' and the 12s are 'my bass sounds great'. :)

My big baby 2 can put out some really deep bass , I’d say it’s a pretty clean sounding cab compared with all the other cabs I’ve had over the years, I haven’t tried the two 10s yet but I probably would if one came up local, just not sure it could put out the same bass though

I think from your description that you’ve made the correct choice. If you want to be sure, you’re welcome to try my ST. I’m only in Colchester

Hi that’s very kind of you

Do you feel a picked played PBass mostly rock etc will suit the ST ?

I need a full deep tone with clarity

Also have you had any concerns about amp head moving off the cab ?

Also I see in your profile pic you use an Orange Terror bass head ??

Do they pair well ?

Im tempted to get one

Hi. I play half our set with a pick and it suits well. That’s an old pic of me with the Orange Terror and it sounded great for old school rock, but was a bit lacking in variety for our set. The gain was difficult to tame. Really good dirt, but difficult to get just a little of it! I now use a Genzler Magellan 800 and couldn’t be happier. Great clean tones and great (switchable) dirt too. Neither of those heads walked off the cab. I had a more lightweight GK MB800 which used to move and my Quilter (another good pairing with the ST) may have done, but after the GK I started putting a non-slip mat under my heads. Depending on the sound you’re after the Quilter may be a good fit for you. It’s opposite to the Orange, in that it’s a fabulous, clean tubey sound, but difficult to get it to break up. Incidentally, I keep meaning to get around to selling mine :)

I've been playing a pair of Super Compacts with a P bass. Full, deep tone with clarity is exactly what they do.

Yes, they do rattle heads off the top on occasion. I use a non-slip mat for the head to keep it in place. Two BF 12's will sound immense, believe the hype.

I nearly purchased the ST cab but the manufacturing time and the cost at the time made me re-think.

The LFsys Monaco came my way ( lovely cab ) and for larger stuff Vanderkley 212 cab ( very nice )
