Expand There is a visceral response to high SPLs and the lower the frequency the greater the response, so yes, big bass cabs on stage have a real effect. But I doubt there's any longer a case for saying you can't get the same tone via other means, both sides of the equation - signal processing and amplification - have just moved on so much.
