Anyone using Apple Music over Spotify?

Recommended Posts

Confession time. I’m pirating a Spotify premium account belonging to my son. But I don’t make a huge demand on it. I have a playlist of stuff we do in the band, or intend to do, and that’s it. I have no interest in what they listen to. An uncle of the daughter in law is one of the founders of Spotify in Sweden so I suppose there is a small amount of loyalty there. I use the Apple music apps for what I have in a fairly extensive old iTunes library on the mac and access that on a Homepod mini as well plus some internet radio stations. I keep thinking I might subscribe to AM so this thread has been interesting.

I don't use any of them. I buy CDs and vinyl.

If I'm driving I listen to a CD or the radio. If I'm on the train I read a book.

I absolutely refuse to have anything to do with Spotify.

One thing no one has mentioned that I like about Apple Music…

When you bounce a song down in Logic, there’s a tick box to add it to Music. This not only sticks it on the Mac I’m working on, but also my other Apple devices with Music on them, such as my phone.  This allows me to then play it anywhere…. In the car, in my earbuds, over a wireless speaker & so on. Perfect for seeing how your song sounds on other systems.

Could never get on with spottythigh.

My listening is split between vinyl records in the living room, CDs in the car (the joys of driving an older car), iTunes via the two Alexa units (kitchen whilst cooking and bedroom at the end of the day) and Spotify on my phone for remote purposes. I always preferred Apple music to Spotify and I note that my tastes are described as "old school" by the algorithms because I listen to whole albums in their entirety. Since lockdown I also picked up a habit of jamming along with YouTube videos. So variety is the spice of life.

My family use it as part of Apple One. It works out decent value, given it gives us all music, Apple TV+, games and storage.

I was a long time Spotify users, but got sick of waiting for them to introduce a higher quality service. I'd probably never notice in a blind-test, but I do like to listen to music in lossless when I can. I read that even if you can't really tell the difference, it can be more fatiguing to listen to lossy music as your brain fills in the gaps. In any case, I'm of the view that there's no practical reason not to make lossless music available now - bandwidth and storage limitations aren't what they once were.

Where I can tell the difference for sure is with spatial audio / Dolby Atmos. These mixes sound great on my headphones, and even better on my Sonos setup at home. It really does breath new life into some older material.

I'd previously tried Tidal and Qobuz. I liked them too, but the lack of a family plan at the time left me paying that for my own lossless needs along with Spotify for the family.

I also gave Amazon music a bash - which offered lossless on a family plant at a good price.. There was a good enough selection and I had no issues with the quality - however I found the UI wasn't great, the app buggy and the integration with Sonos a bit flakey. My family really didn't like it at all.

So, I think I've tried all the main platforms except Deezer over the past few years. I've had Apple Music for well over a year, and it's the one that ticks all of my boxes.

Same here - never owned an iPod or put music on my phone (although I’m not sure how to do that), and I don’t use streaming sites either.

Still got a CD player, a CD recorder, a tape deck and 2 turntables at home, basically a hi-fi separates setup and a couple of ghetto blasters for tapes in the kitchen when I’m cooking.

Only really use the internet for Pornhub and Basschat. Streaming sites don’t get a look in. Not enough milf on them for a start.

Having admitted that, I don’t know why there aren’t more female bassists posting here on BC? I realize it is a very blokey site at times but it would be great to have a better balance of female to male players I reckon. Non-binary too. Bring it all on. Different viewpoints and perspectives and all that. Even about streaming sites 👍

Been a user of Tidal ever since they started charging the same as Spotify but for lossless music.  No brainer, really!

I've trialed Apple Music a few times but I just prefer Tidal's interface.

I sort of did,.as i mentioned i have my gig and rehearsal recordings on Apple Music and can listen on all my Apple devices.

I too love how Logic can export directly to AM and then upload to the cloud. I normaly brak the long ones down in to two half’s but also export one long one for Drop box for the others.

1 of the downsides to AM is that it lacks a proper queue function, so if you like to put together an improptu list of songs it can be pretty frustrating to work with. It has “play next” or “play last”, play next works as it should but play last is a PITA.

Eg, if you go into an album and want track 2 followed by track 7. Once you start playing track 2, AM will queue all the other tracks from the album in sequence automatically. If you then use play last on track 7, it will put it at the back of the queue behind all the other album tracks. So you have to delete everything from the queue or juggle things around manually to get what you want.

Even worse if you have a playlist with a lot of tracks on but want to pick and choose the order via queue functions.

Not a deal breaker for me, but always frustrating when I come across it!
