shug Posted June 24, 2024 Posted June 24, 2024 Anyone who ever saw Rockin' Dopsie, Clifton Chenier, Flaco Jiminez or any of the other greats would have a high opinion of the acordian as an exciting, funky and expressive instrument. 'Cordians got soul. man ! 2 Quote
TheRev Posted June 24, 2024 Posted June 24, 2024 I quite enjoy a bit of accordion, primarily in this context: 2 Quote
Owen Posted June 24, 2024 Posted June 24, 2024 It lends itself astonishingly well to Stravinsky! 2 Quote
rwillett Posted June 25, 2024 Posted June 25, 2024 I lived in Hamburg for a while, mid 90s. I lived with people my own age, young professional programmers, slightly nerdy(OK completely nerdy). Ultra cool when going out, often completely in black, ultra cynical. You get the picture. The moment they saw an accordion player in sodding Lederhosen in the street, they became 60 years old, started clapping along with the music, asking for different music. Basically became their parents. I actually have no issues with an accordion. It's not my musical weapon of choice but only in small measures. Rob Quote

Grahambythesea Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 In the hands of Phil Cunningham, an accordion is brilliant. The bass playing in this song is pretty nifty too. I used to love driving through France with Silly Wizard blasting out of the cassette machine in my little Citroen. Ah, nostalgia is what it used to be. 1 1 Quote

He did a 3-episode series on BBC a while ago which is on YouTube and tells pretty much everything you need to know about accordions Quote
Jay2U Posted June 27, 2024 Posted June 27, 2024 My father played many instruments. Accordion was one of them. To be honest, I didn't like the sound it produced. Somehow I think the sound is rather cheap. Quote

T-Bay Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 Foo fighters did two acoustic songs with an accordion at Villa park last night. ‘Novel’ is probably the best way I could describe it. 1 Quote
squire5 Posted June 28, 2024 Posted June 28, 2024 Whats the sweetest sound an accordian can make? 'SPLASH'. 1 1 1 Quote

chrisba Posted July 1, 2024 Posted July 1, 2024 I was in Corsica last week, and as we walked back from the beach, there were 2 accordianists playing typical French music in the town square, with loads of people sitting ouside the bars under the shade of the trees listening to them, some of whom were drinking pastis, and the rest of the square was taken up with people playing boules. So staggeringly French, it almost felt like a theme park. Adored the place, and sad to be home. 1 Quote
nekomatic Posted July 2, 2024 Posted July 2, 2024 I am currently accordionless, having Freegled the second of our charity shop acquisitions a while back as I wasn't really playing it and it was too out of tune and not worth paying to fix. Although we then visited a mate I hadn't seen in ages and found that he's taken up accordion restoring as a hobby, but never mind. However, mrs nekomatic has inherited an accordion from her uncle in Sweden which we believe to be a decent one and we are in the process of getting it over here via her various sisters who live there - apparently it has survived the first leg of its journey via DHL so fingers crossed. Speaking of fingers crossed though, it's a button model not a piano one, so that'll be an interesting challenge. 1 Quote

I had a chance to play a C-griff model a few weeks ago. It felt like a step up in complexity from a piano accordion, but I could see that once I got my head around the button layout it had a lot more options, in a relatively small package. 1 Quote
meterman Posted July 2, 2024 Posted July 2, 2024 I remember seeing Elzef play live in Paris over a decade ago and instead of the full accordion / brass / upright bass / drums / guitar combo, like here: ...they did a stripped down trio gig of guitar, drums and accordion, playing versions of stuff like this: ...where the accordion player did the bass lines and the brass parts. He was amazing. They also covered a load of classic era hip hop that night with the same lineup and were absolutely rocking 👍 1 Quote
diskwave Posted July 2, 2024 Posted July 2, 2024 That first vid is just lovely. Reminds me of France, sat in a sunny square somewhere with a nice glass of red watching the world go by. 1 Quote
