Basschat Marketplace: do you haggle?

Call me a cynic.... but take caution!

Not a problem here. It's impossible to lose because of the way the couriers operate.

I post the goods. The buyer goes to his local office inspects and pays for the goods and the postage before the goods are released.

The courier then pays me.

It's a superb system which should operate on every country in the world and takes all the risk out of selling / buying anything.

Saw a house, liked it……oh wait, let’s make an offer, offer accepted, super happy bunny with the Porsche 911 I bought with the money I saved🤷‍♂️ why wouldn’t you

Our house run-down cottage cost, back in 1980, £6000. If I'd 'knocked off' a few quid, I could have bought a Matchbox model, maybe, but would have chosen the Bentley over the Porsche. :friends:

Certainly with houses, it's a complex game. People are limited with what the mortgage will lend vs what the house is notionally worth and then what they have agreed to potentially sell their house for. If you don't agree a price, then you may not be able to buy the house you want or even sell the house you have.

Unlike a bit of consumer electronics where most people have a pile of cash ready and waiting. Maybe I've done a gig and have £50 in my pocket and want to buy a certain pedal. If it's £50 including P&P, fine. If it's more, then there's no harm in asking. If someone makes an offer on a metal box that's just sitting in my cupboard, then that's £50 I wouldn't otherwise have.

I'm not going to put it on for £55 and expect to sell it for £50, and it will depend how many messages I get as to whether everyone is offering me £45 as to whether I let it go or hold the price amd wait another day.

You can always say you have had a few messages and will get back to them if the others don't work out.

And it also works the other way, I've sold cars where I've had 5 people lined up to come and look and one has made a higher offer when I've told them I have someone coming later to look at it.

It's one reason to wait a day before replying if someone immediately contacts you.

£32,000 to account for inflation seems a fair price.

That's its present state, after quite a lot of work done (walls rebuilt, roof put on, water, septic tank and electricity now available...) it's never looked batter than now; I've no photos of the state when we bought it; here's some of the chain gang helping out in 2009, just after we'd put a roof on, and I'd bought a camera. Electricity came later...

Anyone got a Wal Mk 1 bass that they don't use?

I'll take it off your back for a tenner, that is you pay me 10£, of course beside you paying the shipping and import fee.

And you ought to consider that a very generous offer, it's an old bass, and I can get a shining brand spanking new bass for under 100£.

Please send a PM.

The offer is final!

Is that the modern equivalent of that staple of French construction, corrugated iron?

Yes, it's corrugated fibre (no asbestos, but the same principle...). I ordered a motif which should have resembled Roman roof tiling...

... but, when it was delivered, I was at work. When I got home, my mates had already started to cover with it, so it was too late to send it back (it came from Italy...). The 'Desert Storm' camouflage has faded somewhat, and there's a thin layer of lichen which has made it easier on the eyes; I'm pleased with it, overall, especially in winter, as we no longer get snow on our faces when asleep in bed. :friends:

I rescind my offer. I was after a vintage relic, you've knocked thousands off its value by restoring it.

Rescind away, my lad, rescind away. This one is going nowhere anyway, at any price. :|

I feel differently about BC though, it feels more like buying from a friend. Everything I've bought here has been well looked after, descriptions have always been scrupulously accurate and everyone polite and helpful. We have a real community feel.

I don't feel differently about BC. Most of us have never met and do not know one another. I've been happy to receive enquiries about whether I would take offers on here (and have accepted a couple). I've done the same when I've been buying. As long as people are courteous and polite, I don't see a problem.

Awwww! 🥰
Here's mine. Owned it since I was a wee lad, and it seems surprisingly fresh, seeing as it was played with back then.
No haggling, you lot!

There's reasonable offers and there's taking the piss.

Nowt wrong with asking someone (nicely!) if they'll take £50 for something that's up for £55, or £1200 for something that's up for £1250, or "Will you include postage?" IMHO especially if it's been up for a while.

I wouldn't then try and haggle further if they said yes, that's taking the piss.

They can always say no!

I certainly wouldn't be offended by it.

If a listing says "No oferrs, the price is firm", that's different.

As long as you're nice I don't see a problem.

Something else to consider is if the seller is looking for a quick sale. To get maximum money for anything you are trying to sell, be it a house, a car or a bass, you usually have to wait a bit longer to find someone who really wants what you've got.

If, on the other hand, there's some expediency to get the item sold then the seller might be more disposed to entertain offers under the asking price.
