Yes, the glass will be I shaped but also has roughly a 30 degree angle in one direction and a 7 degree angle in another...!

You like making your life easy then?

This is one of my favourite threads on here. Years ago when I wanted my own studio I'd have been mightily jealous. Now I'd rather pay to record somewhere like this instead. Hopefully by the time you're finished with this, my band will have found someone prepared to pay for us to record with you.

I have to admit I thought the glass was going to be rectangular and all the weird shapes would be in front of it. Guess I'm wrong...

Thanks guys. Yes glass is very definitely 'I' shaped. Indeed, today one of the guys have been working on finishing the window surround. You can see in this shot the gap which isolates the control room window frame and surround from the live room window frame:

I'm enjoying following this thread!

However, I'd like to make a correction to the signature statement beneath Rimskidog's posts:

Turns out you really can polish a turd afterall!

Carry on; as you were... ;)

So polish away.....

Yup. It might be shiny but, underneath, it's still sh*t!

Today we got new lights:

which we could eventually turn on:

We also got housing for the ATC amps:

And power in the control room... yay!

More lovely work mate, well done.

I remember laying the new wooden floor in the studio I was assistant engineer at back in my teens - cut and planed all the reclaimed wood ourselves, and then, being the lowest ranking fella (there was only me and the boss!) I got the lovely, dust covered job of pushing the giant sander round the floor all day. Grim, stinky, and for weeks I was finding sawdust in places you'd never imagine you could get it!

Great to see the control room taking shape, makes it feel like things are finally coming together. Just realised that this thread has been running since early 2009, must be the longest running build thread BC has ever had!

Cheers guys. Yeah it's been a long time in the making!

So it's official. My knees are too old for this kind of thing. Almost there:

and...

done!

The sharp eyed will see that there are some boards with knots and bark staining marks in them. I decided to place these strategically under the couch and under the desk so they wont be seen once the gear is in the room.

Slowly slowly feels like a good description at this point! Sorry there was no update yesterday. Still lots going on though. The soundlock began to appear:

and I couldn't resist putting an ATC into it's mount (for the eagle eyed, yes, I put the right hand one into the left hand mount... oops), just to have a little listen...

Today was a cable pulling kind of a day.

When I'd initially put the cable into the live room I planned for the day they would move from one side of the building to the other. As a result a rope and pulley system was put in place so that it would be easy just to disconnect the tails from the console/patchbays and scoot it to the other side of the building. Brilliant idea eh? Unfortunately, when the builders started the new control room, they thought that pulley couldn't possibly be going to be used for anything. So they dismantled it. Without telling me. Until today.

As a result the point that the cables exited the old control room was about 5 feet below the roof height of the live room. In an 8 inch wide isolation gap. To say getting them out and over the top of the crawl space above the live room was tricky would be a bit of an understatement. Here are my intrepid assistants Joe and Dan up to their waist in it. The first is Joe wondering how on earth to get hold of them with Dan looking on:

The Joe decides to try snagging the cables with a brush:

Incredibly, he succeeds before pulling them over the crawl space above the live room:

Today was a 'new live room window' kind of a day. It could also have been called a 'back injury' day or even a 'hernia' day.

It took 6 men to lift the glass (all of whom made pained faces throughout) and one to be annoying taking photos (guess which one was me... peachh).

Enough chat, here's the pictures:

and, almost there:

I guess the last picture also gives you a feeling for the height of the lowest ceiling point in the live room...
