I've just spent a good while reading this from the start with a glass of red. Been a great read - can't believe I've not spotted this one earlier!

If I ever start playing the lottery, and subsequently win it, I might have a crack at building a studio with a plaque that says I read this thread.

I've just realised I'm in Birmingham on Friday, but it's a bit too far to walk to :(

oh well... I'm off to make the pizza I've been fantasizing about for the last half an hour despite being unable to stop reading...

Glad you enjoyed it! If you are gonna be in Brum city centre its no more than about 15 minutes walk!

I'm going to Brum New Street then I've got a few mins walk to the place I'm filming (I do video production) but naturally, I have to carry a lot of rather heavy gear with me that makes a simple walk a lot more challenging...

I'll check what ticket I've booked when I'm back in the office on Wednesday - with it being Birmingham (ie not London...) there's a good chance I've got an open return and I'll be able to jump on any train home, hence I won't be limited by time... I'd really love to see the place!

Here are some pictures of the live room from first thing this morning. I tried to capture the width of the room with the first shot (difficult due to the humungous old live room window still sitting in the room!):

I tried to get the length of the room in this one:

And this one is looking from one side wall to the other with a wide angle lens:

Thoise photos aren't gettingt he scale of the place right in my head at all, I cant tell how big it is, I think its probably a lot bigger than the photos convey.

Looks the absolute business though!

Show's how crap and cheap this place is, they can't even change a bulb! :D

That's their sequencer flashing along, although it shows up better on video. Helps with the ambience of 80's disco remix sessions. Don't be fooled by what you see...

Thanks guys. Glad you are enjoying it. Still lots mroe to come though! Here's an old one of the live room to give you more of an idea of size:

Cheers sir! I might take you up on that depending on what time I'm finished etc. I do video production so I'll have a fair bit of camera gear on me. Maybe BC can look forward to Circle Studios: The Movie

There's been lots going on with the electrics this week. Splitting the buildings between the clean and the dirty power boards was finished, a (dirty) sub board was put in for the air-conditioning and we've tried a bunch of different light fittings for the corridor. I think we finally settled on one! Pictures soon.

Also, one of the production rooms with the working title "The White Room" got batoned ready for rockwool and plasterboard. This pic was taken half way through that process:

Two types of light for your delectation today. First a shot of the wall lights I settled on for the corridor:

Continuing the circular theme, the second is a first picture of the sky-light which is appearing above the soundlock:

Cant get my head round where that skylight is going to be, but its making me dizzy

It's in the soundlock as you walk out of the control room (through the door with the circular holes).

The 'white room' got a door frame:

a solid core door sandwiched with limp mass membrane and mdf:

and eventually, a door:

(But not handles...). Anyway, here's a cross section:

I finally got my racks wired in! Here's one of them:

TBH, in the new room, my old rack looks a bit tired. I suspect I'll be needing new furniture at some point pretty soon... (there should be an emoticon for money being thrown into a giant pit gooof)

For the gear whores on here ;)

Looks to be some very tasty compressor action going on in there (couple of La-2a's and a couple of 1176's, and an Empirical Labs Distressor for a start!) a Manley Massive Passive EQ (maybe? Hard to be sure), some API and or Focusrite Blue pieces in there perhaps (clutching at straws here now ;)) and at least 3 other two channel items that I vaguely recognise but cant real off the name and number for immediately, and will kick myself for not getting straight away I'm sure, plus a bunch of other interesting stuff too :)

If you dont like that rack I'll take it off your hands for you anytime you like :D, it looks fantastic mate!

Gearlist is over here: http://www.circlestudios.co.uk/thegear.php

There have been a few additions since that was done but it covers what you see in that rack.

In other news...

Here's the formwork for the new gear ramps which we are putting into the building. On a practical level they mean that all studios in the building can be reached without lifting gear up steps. What's more it means the whole place complies with disabled access requirements. We've used polystyrene for the formwork so that it can be scraped out once the concrete has gone off, thereby maintaining the isolation between all rooms:

Here's the concrete going in:

Corridor ramps are now complete:

and non-parallel walls have been framed in the white room:
