If it is the latter early The Smiths and late Meshuga (Edit: Forgot Meshuga tunes their 8 string guitars one half step bellow regular tuning, so that would actually be F (and yes, the bass player plays same octave as the guitars)). Some strange kind of bass that can only be tuned one way? Curious... My apologies for having wasted your time on my behalf inciting you to write that snide remark. But there is a reason why the bass player from Meshuga plays the same octave as the 8 string guitars.
