Backing vocals

Correctamundo.

Obviously most bands get their vocal FX from the mixer, but I play in three very different bands with - respectively  - two, three, and four vocalists, plus I play a fair number of festival gigs where our sound is at the mercy of a complete stranger.

This vox pedal board insulates me and @Silvia Bluejay from all that. We never have any vocal processing on our mixer and at festival gigs we tell the sound guy to bypass everything.

If it didn't work,  we wouldn't be doing it. 😇

sounds great. Does the harmony pedal create 3rds and 5ths etc I have the TC electronics harmony G but last time I used it, I found it a bit too complicated

I used to sing close harmonies on a couple of songs with the lead vocalist in a band a few years ago.

In certain places, I would note they would end up singing the harmony line with me, which would end up in us both singing the harmony in unison which would drop the magic and feel like a house of cards had just collapsed (to me, anyway).

I now occasionally dep for them, and the keyboard player (who joined after I left) now does BVs and I have noticed he has worked this out and sings the melody when the lead vocalist goes to the harmony.  I wish my brain was able to work that quickly when playing bass and doing harmonies!

It does 1/2/3 voices above or below, and you can get suitable harmonies for minor keys by using relative keys on your selection.

My voice is a muddy baritone so I'm far more interested in the four UP settings than the four DOWN settings.

In practice, I actually use two of those four a lot and one more occasionally. I have the settings on my main setlist so it's no big deal to adjust the key manually.

If you're a guitarist then you can pass your guitar signal through the pedal for automatic key selection, but that's of no use to a DB player and of dubious value to a guitarist too, since you still need to select the effect manually.

When I sang backing vocals in an original band I pretty much had free hands (same with the lead guitar and bass I played in the same band), but did take suggestions/instructions if required.

Having sung in the local church choir in my youth (I think from I was about 12 till about 18), getting a lot of practice with musical pieces with several harmonizing voices, coming up with harmonizing vocals on the spot is pretty much second nature to me.

I remember arguing with my friend about how to sing "Love Me Do", by The Beatles (we were very young at the time). It was only many years later that I realised we were both right, but were just singing different vocal parts 😄
